    1. [CIVIL-WAR] Grave Marker
    2. Edward Harding
    3. I am glad to see that the appropriate actions were taken regarding this marker. I know there's no way to actually tell if it was taken off a grave or was just a memorial item for the family since it's not an actual stone. In most States I know of, there are laws regarding the desecration of a grave, and depending on how much damaged, in my State of North Carolina, it can either be a serious misdemeanor or even a felony. There is a General Statute in North Carolina laws about this, and we fight to keep all graves preserved and honored. I've seen too many farm fields where graves have been plowed over, stones moved, etc, and several times before, I paid to put an ad in the local newspaper that showed the General Statute. I just feel it's up to those of us who really care to prevent this from happening. If anyone has a question about the laws of your state regarding the desecration of graves, check with an attorney, or if one is unwilling to help you, contact your State Attorney General's office and have them send you a copy of the General Statute. I applaud and commend the work you've done to insure that this marker goes back to where it should be. Edward

    2. No, Sherri, Ebay didn't confide in me that action that they will take, but I have had experience in the past. Before they had this new rule against selling grave marker on Ebay. My DAR group found several for sale and were able to get them removed by stating that they were, obviously, stolen. Ebay decided that they didn't want to make the decision on whether they were stolen or collected my family, so they made the rule that they can NOT be sold. For that reason, I know that the item will be removed. It is interesting that you found what the H. V. C. means as I searched and couldn't find anything on it. Interesting too, my Mom was a Morgan and her Mom was a Hancock. The email for the Sons of Union Veterans is: SUVWEBMSTR@aol.com His name is Kent Peterson and is the webmaster of their website, but is the National President, also. I went to the website of the Daughters of Union Veterans, but couldn't find an email address and figure the men may have more resources to get the job done, although, we women don't waste any time. <g> I am glad that you brought this to our attention and we all learned from it too. Ask Kent to keep us informed of whether they are able to obtain the grave marker. I have contacted the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War so that they can contact the seller to try to get the marker back to its proper place on the grave of Union Veteran, F.W. Schaefer. ______________________________________________________________ Thank you so much Julia for taking an active interest in this matter. As I told the Schaefer List, I think the more people who report this item, the better it will be for us. I do have a couple of things that I'm wondering about. 1] When I reported the item, eBay sent me an automated email that stated this: .......................................................... We will thoroughly investigate the item number(s) you have reported. Please keep in mind that the actions taken on a specific listing are confidential and between eBay and the seller. We will not be able to keep you abreast of any developments for privacy reasons, but we assure you that we will thoroughly examine this information. .......................................................... You seem to state with such confidence that the item is going to be removed that it makes it sound as if eBay sent you some other type of notification. Did they? If so, please let me know, so that I can report it in the same manner that you reported it. I may not be on the inside track, so to speak. 2] Could you please share the contact information for the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War with me? I would like to contact them myself and so would other members of the Schaefer List. Our goal as a group was not merely to have the grave marker removed from auction on eBay, but to restore the grave marker to the cemetery where it belongs. I do so appreciate you going the extra mile for us on this and being sensitive to that aspect as well. It takes a special person like yourself to pick up on the human side of this issue. Please let me know that contact info at your earliest convenience so that I can inform the Schaefer List. One last thing that I would like to mention to the entire List is that I believe that the H.V.C. most likely stands for this. I found this info researching this matter yesterday. If anyone can confirm, I would appreciate it. ..................................................... Taken from the following URL: http://www.contrib.andrew.cmu.edu/~jw3u/round/141-150.htm This is the description on that page: H. V. C.--Hancock's Veteran Corps. A Circle Surrounded by a Wreath of Laurel. Wide Red Band Passes Vertically Through the Circle from the Wreath, radiates rays in such a manner as to form a Heptagon with Concave Sides. Seven hands spring from the Wreath, each grasping a Spear, whose heads point the several angles of the Heptagon. The badge adopted originated with Col. C. H. Morgan, Hancock's chief-of-staff. Was approved by Gen. W. S. Hancock in the fall of 1864. General W.S. Hancock bio may be read at the following URL: http://www.civilwarhome.com/hanbio.htm .................................................... A hearty thanks to any and all who took an interest in this issue and I'll be anxiously awaiting the input from you Julia. Oh, please answer directly to the List so that any others who would also contact either eBay or the Sons of the Union will have the proper information to do so. 2. I have a question about a grave marker. This is actually an atrocity in my opinion and the Schaefer Rootsweb List is trying to find some help in this matter without tipping off the sellers of a Civil War grave marker that is on ebay. We could really use your input on a few things. 1] What does the H.V.C stand for? 2] We have not been able to locate this man's info online in rosters to our satisfaction because of the many spelling variations of the surname Schaefer. 3] What are our options in a case like this? The item may be viewed by going to ebay.com and the item number is 2194059513. If you enter that number into the search box on ebay, it'll pull a Civil War grave marker for F.W. Schaefer. Please email me with any input. Time is running out on this item. Sherri Schaefer Bagby www.berlindog.com

    3. It is possible there may be some more info on the compiled military service records from NARA. You'll never know unless you order them. Since we are talking about Alabama, and serving the confederacy, I assume you are aware that any pension records would be found in the state archives of the state administering the confederate pension. Confederates were not eligible for federal pension programs, of course. Whatever state the person was living in at the time of application, is where you'll find the pension record. If you think it was Alabama, here is the web-site for the ADAH: http://www.archives.state.al.us/index.html Jim Gilmer -------Original Message------- From: CIVIL-WAR-L@rootsweb.com Date: Saturday, September 27, 2003 06:05:46 To: CIVIL-WAR-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [CIVIL-WAR] LASLIE/45th & 23rd AL I have located the card information for J. Is it likely if we order the complete record from NARA ($17 each) that we will learn much more than was on the card? We did not locate a widow's pension application card for either of them. 3. Hello Edward, Thank you for your kind offer. Actually I have some information on my gg-uncle Wilson Hensley, but I would appreciate you checking to see if you can find anything on his twin brother Archibald Hensley. I have virtually nothing on Archibald other than the fact that he also was with the 16th NC and was killed at Chancellorsville on May 3. I am still searching for Archibald's burial location but am not having much luck with that either. Thanks, Brenda --- Edward Harding <eharding2@cox.net> wrote: > Brenda, > > If you don't already have the information on your > gg-uncle, I'd be glad to > send you what I can find in North Carolina Troops > 1861-1865: A Roster.
