    1. [CIVIL-WAR] Civil War Error - Moore
    2. Edward, I'm in contact with an extremely good researcher who is related to the Bagby line, but is also related to the Moore line. I sent him this information in the hopes that he can help in this matter. Sometimes his work takes him away and he doesn't respond quickly, but if he is available, he finds information that you think could never be found. If and when I hear back from him, I'll let you know. Sherri Schaefer Bagby

    3. In my original posting, in error, I showed the incorrect volume of North Carolina Troops 1861-1865: A Roster, regarding the information on Lemuel Moore. It is not Volume III he is listed in, but rather Volume VIII. Just not enough Oomph in these old hands when typing. Thanks again. Edward

    1. [CIVIL-WAR] Talk About an Error
    2. Edward Harding
    3. Hi List, I wanted to share a big Union goof-up with you that I have recently run into. I was contacted by a very nice lady who's ancestor died at Point Lookout, Maryland. It seems his name is missing on the list of POW's who died there, and due to this, she is unable to join the Point Lookout POW Association. It seems her ancestor, Private Lemuel Moore died at Point Lookout of "dysentery acute," but somehow the Union soldiers got him mixed up with a Joseph L. Moore who was also a Private there. You ask, how could this mix-up happen? I'll give you the information and let you come to the same conclusion I did. I'll list the information I have below, so all of you can make up your own minds as to what happened. I have already written the Point Lookout Descendants Organization in hopes this error might be corrected. I'm also hoping a member of that organization might be on this list to help getting this corrected too, so that Private Lemuel Moore can receive the honor and respect! he deserves. North Carolina Troops 1861-1865: A Roster Volume VI Infantry Page 420 Company K, 18th Regiment N.C. Troops MOORE, JOSEPH L., Private Resided in Iredell County and enlisted at age 20, September 7, 1862, for the war. Present or accounted for until captured at Wilderness, Virginia, May 6, 1864. Confined at Point Lookout, Maryland. Records of the Federal Provost Marshal indicate that he died at Point Lookout on July 20, 1864, and that he was released at Point Lookout on June 21, 1865, after taking the Oath of Allegiance. North Carolina Troops 1861-1865: A Roster Volume III Infantry Page 227 Company K, 28th Regiment N.C. Troops MOORE, LEMUEL, Private Enlisted in Granville County on October 20, 1863, for the war. Captured at or near Spotsylvania Court House, Virginia, on or about May 12, 1864. Confined at Point Lookout, Maryland. Died at Point Lookout on July 20, 1864, of "dysentery acute." Register of Confederate Soldiers and Sailors Who Died in Federal Prisons and Military Hospitals in the North Compiled in the Office of the Commissioner for marking graves of Confederate dead, War Department, 1912 NAME RANK CO REGIMENT DATE OF DEATH GRAVE LOCATION Moore, Joseph L. Pvt K 18 NC 7/20/1864 Confederate Cemetery In the list of Point Lookout POW's who died, Lemuel Moore is nowhere to be found. It's pretty easy to tell how this error was made. Both men were from North Carolina, both were POW's at Point Lookout, both were in a Company "K", but one being in the 18th Regiment and the other in the 28th Regiment. Another thing that could have caused confusion was that Joseph's middle initial was an "L". Seeing that the Federal Provost Marshal wasn't exactly sure if Joseph L. Moore died on July 20, 1864 or released after taking the Oath of Allegiance is also something to think about. In fact, Lemuel Moore DID DIE on July 20, 1864. One note: the information from North Carolina Troops 1861-1865: A Roster was taken from company records, service records, pension files, old United Daughter's of the Confederacy records, etc. North Carolina actually kept the best records on her soldiers than any other state in the Confederacy. I would just like to see the honor given to Lemuel Moore that he deserves and that his descendants can know he is rightfully remembered and documented as a POW who died at Point Lookout. Lovell Rousseau to Nashville, Tenn. Served Provost duty there, Boy! that was some hot town, that gramps didn't talk much about, still trying to pin down where they planted him. 3. Hi, This Battle should have been near Decatur, AL, but I can find no specific location. Since Curtis Wells was probably the name of a community in 1864, I would suggest looking for it on the 1850 and 1860 census in Morgan, Lawrence, and Limestone Co. AL. I will do the same; if I find anything I will be sure to post it to the list. 2. Hi List, I have always heard that Henry Wirz, Commandant of Andersonville was the only man hanged for war crimes after the Civil War. Recently I read that Champ Ferguson, a partisan leader, and Captain Robert Cobb Kennedy, a man involved in a plot to burn large sections of New York were also hanged after the war. Does anyone know of any others who received the death penalty for war crimes after the Civil War? James Horton, Esq.

    3. I am not too sure of your explanation, it is just too pat and self serving. These Items were for grave sites not for yard remembrances. Think about it, remembrances were printed on paper and framed for use in the house. Just to how many Cemeteries have you gone? Where there are Civil War Veterans are Buried there are GAR and Confederate Organizations Items similar to this Item. I have a number of Civil War Veterans, Both Sides and Anyone taking the SYMBOLS had better watch out, because they would have to answer to me and that is not a threat, that it is a promise! I have suggested to you, that it would be in your best interest, to return the MARKER to the RELATED person and she will place it on the Grave Site where it belongs. Anything less would indicate a less than HONORABLE MOTIVE. Take your MONETARY LOSS and LEARN A LESSON. Personally, I would SUE you and have you charged with GRAVE DESECRATION. You would get no SYMPATHY from me. 3. Sherri, As a part of my home library, I have a small book titled "Historical Record: City of Savannah" by F.D. Lee and J.L. Agnew. The book is an original, and was printed in Savannah, Georgia in 1869 by J.H. Estill, Morning News Steam-Power Press. My reason for wanting to let you know about this book is that it was owned by George W. Bagby, and has his signature in it, as well as a sticker which says, Mrs. Geo. W. Bagby, Richmond, Va. There is also a modern photocopy of a picture of Mr. Bagby in it. It was copied from "The Old Virginia Gentlemen and Other Sketches" by George W. Bagby, edited and arranged by his daughter, Ellen M. Bagby. It's a wonderful little book and so full of good history; history as written before our modern day PC history. I just wanted to let you know about this small book as I wasn't sure if this George W. Bagby was indeed the man who was your ancestor. Edward Harding Washington, NC eharding2@cox.net
