    3. Hi Kevin, If you will notice my last message, I state that your site is "a worthy dedication to those who lost their lives in support of their country". I understand that your site is dedicated to ALL those who fought, and not just the Civil War soldiers. As the great great granddaughter of a Civil War Vet, the niece of a WWI vet, and the niece of a VietNam vet, I want to personally thank you for your tribute to ALL of these men and women who gave their lives for us. 3. Dennis, I havent read the article but I have to say that your mention of hookworm here is the first I have heard in the years I have been doing research here. I assume that conection is that the biggest killer was diarrhea caused by the polluted water supply. The small stream that was in most part , the only source for a large part of 1864. This stream passed through the small town of Andersonville, the Guards encampment, the small bakery where all grease eventually ended up in the stream,,,,the guards hospital, latrines, then it passed into the stockade for prisoner use. When you had a 30,000 population in 26.5 acre area,,,its obvious what went into the drinking water. Can anyone send me the mailing address to North and South Magazine or could I get someone to send me a subscription card? Thanks. 3. I have been reading all these letters, & have a great deal of help from friends like you-all, being a little older than some of you, will turn 76 Oct 25th, Please don't send gifts under $1,000! I'm a ww2 vet. Navy, served in Pacific. I couldn't help feeling sorry for the unfortunate prisoners, Would like to add some humor now, that wasn't then. ( This came from pension records) Granpa being in Athens, Ala. 1864 became very ill, but refused to go to sick bay, was told to go on a scout to drive the rebels back, ( no offence Johnys) His friend got permission to go in his place, guess what.....he got captured. After the war he said if he would of known ahead he wouldn't of went. I guess if gramp would of went & was captured he wouldn't of survided & I wouldn't be here! still looking for his grave site. If this is out of line please let me know, AND............. Have a musket, " ball"! Ken.

    3. In July I had the PRIVILEGE of going to ANDERSONVILLE and also seeing the POW MUSEUM. I spent most of the day going through the POW Museum and saw how inhumane humans really are. IF you can by all means see this museum. Emotionally it is difficult. BUT, necessary to understand. I live near Los Angeles and THE MUSEUM OF TOLERANCE http://www.museumoftolerance.com another Museum worth the time and effort. We learn that WE MUST THINK OF EVERYONE AS BROTHERS & SISTERS - NOT JUST - OTHERS! Richard Callard

    3. Kevin, I had to tell you I checked out your site tonight, couldn't see it to well for the tears, if you all haven't been there you need to see this awesome site, I had ancestors on both sides of this war and nothing I have ever read has hit home like this site has, Pray to God our country never goes through anything like this again and bring home the boys who are off fighting now. 3. Scurvy ( AKA SCORBUTUS ) was caused by the complete lack of vitamin C. The total lack of vegitables was the cause. Simly eating vegitables was the cure. Simple as that. The problem is that this disease caused teeth to fall out,,,Gums bleed,,,,,and all this added to many other problems that were not easy to recover from. It was one of the majoy causes of death here at Andersonville. 3. My gggrandfather, John H. Moody, was imprisoned at Rock Island Arsenal Prison after the Battle of Lookout Mountain. I suspect that he was a "galvanized yankee" because he went to fight Indians after he got out of this prison. While in prison, he contracted a bad case of scurvy. A doctor somewhere "scraped the bone" in his arm in an attempt to cure his arm of the scurvy, but he never again had use of that arm. My questions: What is this procedure of "scraping the bone"? What did it entail, and how was it supposed to work? Was this a common treatment for scurvy? Any information about this disease and treatment would be greatly appreciated. Janet Graham Theberge

    3. Hi all, I wanted to say Thanks to Saralie and Sherri for the kind words and help. I guess I just tend to try and help others with lost causes, and the lady who is the descendant of Lemuel Moore was at a total loss and at a complete dead end. Once I got into this and realized what probably happened, I just had to try and make sure a Proud Son of North Carolina was recognized honorably as he should be. The descendants of Private Lemuel Moore should also be recognized as descendants of a Point Lookout POW who died and is buried there. Thanks to everyone on the list who may be of help. Edward
