Can you narrow it down a little, where in New YORK? The Question has been brought up as what is eBay's Policy as to GRAVE MARKERS. PROHIBITED AND RESTRICTED ITEMS Under ARTIFACTS Historical Graves, Tombstones or RELATED MARKERS THESE ITEMS MAY NOT BE LISTED ON eBAY. While we recognize that some historical grave markers may be privately held WITHIN FAMILIES and legal to sell, eBAY is concerned with vandalism that has occurred in graveyards across the world. What happens when a PROHIBITED AND RESTRICTED Item is listed? Here is the typical course of events surrounding a listing that should not be on the general site. A member reports an item to us. We then look up the item and determine (if it is a PROHIBITED or RESTRICTED item) If the item violates (eBAY) policies we end it, notify the seller and any bidders, then respond to the member who reported the ITEM. Almost every State had laws against GRAVE DESECRATION. THESE ARE STATE LAWS, not local, but are enforced by local police. What can you do about GRAVE DESECRATION? These laws are to protect your ancestors graves, or your parents, or your spouse, or your children. Be outraged at the vandalism, have your local police enforce the law. AND stop the sale of these types of Items EVERYWHERE. NO MARKET = NO VANDALISM. Without our ancestors, we would not be. Richard Callard

Now, that I have your attention. 1. Contact Detective Crugnola, North Bergen, NJ Police Department. Ask him to impound the GRAVE MARKER and enforce the law against GRAVE DESECRATION. 2. Contact the Seller at trueway1@aol.com suggest that the GRAVE MARKER be placed in a CIVIL WAR Museum until the grave can be located and the GRAVE MARKER be replaced. That for good public relations, they should make no money of this GRAVE MARKER. Should they respond in a positive way and place it in a CIVIL WAR Museum, you might suggest that we will contact the Media in a positive way. Should they take a negative viewpoint and demand money, be assured that we will contact the media in a negative way as far as they are involved. 3. Contact each and every CIVIL WAR SITE and ask their support. Any other suggestions are welcome. Richard Callard -----Original Message----- From: Carlene M. I wish to be in contact with that person direct and not through a second hand assurance that you have done everything that you can do. Richard, I will give you the email address of the Sons of Union Veterans, but anyone can find it on the Internet just as I did. I must say that your attitude doesn't make one want to do you any favors. It isn't my duty to do anything to protect this Marker on eBay, but I did all that I felt that I could do. I didn't see that you did anything except complain. If you are so indignant about it you could, always, purchase it yourself and have it placed back on the grave of the deceased Union Veteran. And yes, I have had lots of experience with DAR markers being removed on eBay. I have even bid on them myself to get them back to the proper grave, and many times the listing would simply "disappear" and I would get an email from eBay saying that the auction of this Item had been canceled with an URL to go see why. When clicking on the URL it would say that it was a Forbidden Item and couldn't be sold on eBay. The email of the person that I contacted is the President of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War and he reassured me that they were doing what they could. It is: SUVWEBMSTR@aol.com Julia French Wood
I may be wrong, but I don't believe the sale was stopped by eBay. It is possible that the price was too high and that is the reason that nobody bid, and the fact that it had a name on it which would be of no interest to another surnamed family, AND lots of the bidders do avoid items that they feel shouldn't be on eBay. In my experience, when an item is removed by the authorities at eBay, the listing will disappear. We have done all that we can do to get it back to where it belongs. I am sure that the Sons of Union Veterans contacted the seller, and am hopeful that they were able to make a deal. Short of buying it yourself, there is nothing more that we can do. Julia French Wood
If you had the STUPID responses that was from a shill for the Seller and people stating the obvious. Plus people telling that they would do something and not doing it, you would have an attitude, also. I have done a lot more than "except complain." This has been going on almost a month. 1. E-Bay was contacted and all bids were blocked. 2. The police in North Bergen, NJ were contacted by phone and I live in California. 3. A number of Civil War Sites were contacted (You would never how deft at passing the buck some are. BUT, If they asked help it would be a different story.) 4. The Seller is not on e-Bay now, for how long? 5. Why should I pay a thief for property? If I'm understanding all of the below correctly, you are saying that the auction is still showing on ebay but it was stopped by ebay. ... If it was stopped by ebay it wouldn't show on their site as ebay would have taken it off at the time ebay stopped it. Dear YOUR NAME, Everything is spelled out and what you think is incorrect. 1, The Auction was stopped by e-Bay. 2, The Item is an Item forbidden for sale on e-Bay. 3, This does not preclude the sale to an INDIVIDUAL. 4. Once it is sold it can disappear. ` 5. We must recover it before it disappears and have it returned to the grave site where it belongs. 6. OR at least put in a Civil War Museum until the Grave Site is determined. NO ONE BID ON IT BECAUSE WE ASKED e-Bay TO STOP THE AUCTION, AS IT IS AN ITEM NOT ALLOWED TO BE SOLD ON e-BAY. THAT IS NOT STOPPING THE SALE TO AN INDIVIDUAL. THEY SAID THAT IT WAS A "LAWN DECORATION". Like the GAR and the CVA Grave Markers are "LAWN DECORATIONS"? If this were on your ancestors grave and taken and sold. Would you be disturbed and outright angry? THIS IS A MATTER OF OUT RIGHT GRAVE DESECRATION, AND THERE ARE LAWS AGAINST IT. We are asking for help. Before it is gone. Hi Kevin, I live just down the road from Chickamauga Battle Field and everyday as I drive through the park I am awe struck by it's beauty. I suggest you park the car and walk. There are so many paths and until you walk them there is no way you can truly experience the true "feel" of the war. I call it the Silence of War.......... While at the museum check and see if they have finally gotten in a simple little book "SEEN THE GLORY". It is the story of Mark Thrash and his brother, slaves, who helped bury the dead. Mark was then 16 and lived to be 123. This time of the year there are always reenactments being held on the weekends. Just ask at the museum. Go into the small town of Chickamauga, at the one red light turn left and you will almost immediately see the Gordon Lee Mansion, on the right, that was used as a hospital for both sides. Blood can still be seen on the floor of the room used for surgery. The was the residence of James Gordon who was originally from Scotland. The Mansion is now a Bed and Breakfast Inn. Don't be shy, knock on the door and ask if you could see inside....the worst that can happen is they say "No". The Lee and Gordon Mill located off Hwy. 27 is one of the oldest mills in GA. It was owned by James Gordon, and operated by James Lee who married Elizabeth Gordon. The small and very old Methodist Church next to the mansion is named for Elizabeth Gordon Lee. Have fun..........I will be watching for you............Pam
Thanks for the suggestion. I have been to Gettysburg many times and it sounds like the drive around and such is a good method. I want to see all as my roots were Pennsylvania regiments and my wife's were here middle Georgia regiments. I have been to Kennesaw several times and makes for a great day trip. I'm at Andersonville every few weekends and always here for special events....March Living history...Memorial day weekend,,,Veterans day,,,October living history. My offer to meet anyone on this list or any others to meet you there...I give a great 3 hour dime tour...is open to all researchers. From the diaries I have read and as many refer to the " Raiders" the Turner production " Andersonville " portrays a very accurate showing of what happened here at Andersonville. Although the hanging scene was inaccurate as the large fellow....William Collins,,,,the large guy who commands the movie,,,his rope broke. He hit the ground out cold and when water was thrown on him to revive him,,,he got up crying " Devine intervention " as well as father Whelan tried to save him. The prisoners wanted to part of stopping him,,,marched him back up and " sent him off to eternity " You will find my page http://www.angelfire.com/ga2/Andersonvilleprison/raiders.html most interesting.
