    3. Kevin, I deeply admire the work of the UDS as well as that of the OCR. We work very closely with both of these fine organizations. I guess what I want to say is this: Don't let anyone tell you that the government (VA) can refuse to supply a grave marker for a Confederate veteran. Your local SVC, UDC or OCR can tell you how to obtain one. --Derick ----- Original Message ----- From: "Kevin Frye" <frye@gnat.net> To: <CIVIL-WAR-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, November 06, 2003 8:58 PM Subject: Re: [CIVIL-WAR] Re: CSA marker > Derick, > Im not trying to elevate the heat and respectily trust your dedicated > work. > Again I dont know of other states, but the local UDC here in Taylor > County Georgia indeed did place a traditional Confederate headstone in front > of the origional family placed headstone for my wifes ancestor..Zachariah > Beeland who is buried outside of Reynolds Georgia. 3. Derrick, You are absolutely correct, and have stated it clearly. I just went through this with our local SCV chapter in Covington County, Al, trying to get CSA markers for two of my wife's civil war ancestors, whose graves are already marked---as you say, the government will not furnish the markers because their graves are already marked with private tombstones! The solution, if one wants the CSA markers placed, is to purchase the markers from a local monument maker. I am a member of the SCV and have assisted MANY folks get Confederate grave markers for CSA vets from the V so I know of what I speak. If anyone is prepared to send documentation to the VA, they will create a marker for any Confederate service (1861-1865) member who DOES NOT currently have a grave marker. If there is already a marker in place (as they stipulate), it doesn't matter what war they fought inor what side they were on, the VA will NOT supply a marker if the veteran died BEFORE 11 Sep 2001, Those who died AFTER 11 Sep 2001 are entitled to a private and/or VA marker. Again I dont know of other states, but the local UDC here in Taylor County Georgia indeed did place a traditional Confederate headstone in front of the origional family placed headstone for my wifes ancestor..Zachariah Beeland who is buried outside of Reynolds Georgia. They are very active here and have constant fundraisings for such purposes. 3. Vickye, I dont know about all states, but here in Georgia the United Daughters of the Confederacy local chapters often place the traditional Confederate headstones,,,not the US Government, Its possiable that in the years following the war that the Georgia state government did this...but as for my wifes GGGrandfather who is buried not far from here,,,received one such stone to add to...not replace,,,his origional family bought stone. It was bought and placed by the local U.D.C. 2. Derick Hartshorn
    3. I think you misread the web page. I KNOW George Bush wouldn't dare shut off that program . You may print out the request form (known as VA 40-1330) found at: http://www.cem.va.gov/pdf/401330.pdf My experience with VA-supplied markers can be found at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~nccatawb/dcwilson.htm 4.03 HEADSTONES OR MARKERS a. The Monument Service, National Cemetery System, will furnish free of cost a headstone or marker to be placed at the unmarked grave of a member of the Armed Forces of the United States or the Confederate States of America who either died in the service or who was discharged or released therefrom under conditions other than dishonorable. 4-2 M21-1, Part VII July 24, 1990 b. Application for graves of veterans in private cemeteries will be made on VA Form 40-1330, Application for Standard Government Headstone or Marker, which will be submitted in accordance with the instructions printed thereon. The nearest relative, or funeral director, or other person (barring intent of the relative to erect a private monument) may execute the application. No application is required for burials in national cemeteries; headstones or markers are supplied automatically upon submission of a VA Form 40-4956, Record of Interment, by the national cemetery Director. c. The Government will prepay shipping charges to the extent indicated on VA Form 40-1330. Costs incident to transporting the stone to the private cemetery from the consignee address, and to erection at the grave are not payable by the Federal Government. At Government cemeteries, all costs are borne by the Federal Government. Then you fill out the requested information and supply supporting evidence that he or she is a veteran and send it to the appropriate office of the Veterans Administration. Should get a monument within a couple of months.
