Paula, I have been researching the 3rd and 6th Tenn. Infantries (Union) and have found that at least 1/3 of the files I have tried to get are still at the VA...so I would say that more than a few are still there. I actually went to the VA with a list of names (direct ancestors or related family) and was told to leave the applications on a chair and if she could get around to it, after she finished 4 boxes of papers, she might look into it. During the entire conversation I spoke to her back. She never turned around or acknowledged me except to tell me to leave my requests on the chair. Fithian, The source I use to find soldiers just for Name, State, Rank, Company, and Regiment is the Confederate Roster compiled by Broadfoot Publishing Company that I have on CD. The cd contains approximately 1,500,000 names. The only drawback for most people in getting it is the price ($450). I mainly concentrate on soldiers from North Carolina and once I find a soldier's company and regiment, I can look him up in the volumes of "North Carolina Troops 1861-1865: A Roster" that I have. These volumes of books contain information on soldiers taken from many old records such as muster rolls, company records, regimental records, hospital records, and old UDC records. I've just been very lucky to be able to put together a fairly decent research library at home. I also have regimental histories in "North Carolina Regiments 1861-65'", a book and also a cd with listings of Confederate POW's who died in Union POW Camps, Confederate Enlisted Marines, etc. I'm always glad to help people find information on ancestors and just wish I had more detailed information on soldiers other than just those from NC. Two recent things I acquired that have been EXCELLENT reading on CD are the complete Slave Narratives and the Southern Historical Society Papers. If I can ever be of any future help to you or anyone else on the list, please feel free to contact me. Edward Harding Washington, NC SCV/MOSB Life Member SCV National Genealogy Committee Member
Fithian, I've gone through my list of Confederate soldiers and can only positively identify one of the names you listed. Below is what I found on each name: Cutrer, Isaac Wesley - Only one Isaac Cutrer found but middle initial was L. He served as a Private in Co. B, Louisiana 16th Infantry Regiment Jones, James -This name was very common with a total of 1578 listings under this name. There were 22 listings from Mississippi. -This is just too broad to narrow down to one person. Lowery, Paul Sanford -I could find no listing for this man. I checked under both Lowery and Lowry. The only listing that was even remotely close was for a P.S. Lowery, but this man served from South Carolina Edwards, Marcus L. -Positively Identified....served as a Private in Co. F, Mississippi 5th Infantry Regiment I hope this bit of information will be of some help. Best regards, Edward Harding Washington, NC http://ehardingwbtsancestors.homestead.com/Index.html

Nancy, You don't indicate whether or not you were successful in getting the files. If not, NARA recommends you request the pension files under the Freedom of Information Act. I have a copy of their proposed form letter. If you would like a copy, contact me off line. It works; it takes a lot of time (50 weeks in one case), but they can find them. Alice J. Roy This website lists Company C of the 6th Ga State Guards. http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/ga/military/civilwar/rosters/6thcoc.txt At Soldiers and Sailors there is an Alphonso Hardeman listed as well as a A Hardaman (may be the same man) in the 6th Georgia Infantry State Guards. This unit had about 900 men in it. One of the men was listed was a Samuel W Mangham who came in as a private companies F & S and went out as a Lt. Col.. Mangham was listed in the Confederate Military History in May 11, 1861 as a Captain of the Fifth Regiment of Georgia Volunteers In the OR serving under Brigadier General Henry R Jackson in a category called "Georgia State Troops" is Lt. Col. Samuel Mangham in command of 6th Georgia State Guard as a Lt Colonel. This was from January 1 to February 29 1864 OR Series I Vl 35 book 1. I am not an expert on Georgia Troops but perhaps someone who is can fill in more information. I forgot to ask you for your source citing: can you please provide me a link or name of the library/archive, etc. so I can document these listings. Particularly for Cutrer, and Edwards. If you give me the database for the Jones listings, I will go through that one myself... many thanks, again, Fithian On Feb 19, 2006, at 3:10 PM, Edward Harding wrote: > Fithian, > > I've gone through my list of Confederate soldiers and can only > positively identify one of the names you listed. yes, thank you Edward. This is a great help. There was only one Isaac Cutrer from Louisiana, so I am fairly certain that he is my ancestor (g'grandfather). I understand about the James Jones factor...which is why it has been so hard for me to find him. Lowery in S. CArolina was a distant relative, so will keep it for my records, and will make use of the listing for MArcus L. Edwards. Thank you! What a great help you are! I am looking for information on Alphonso Hardeman / Hardman who was in the 6 Georgia Inf (State Guards ) and history of the 6th. I believe he died during the war and would like to find where he is buried. I have not been able to find any history on the 6th. Thanks, Roy Hunter <>< [email protected]
Renee He probably would not have needed a birth certificate for naturalization in those days. The normal form was to sign a document renouncing all allegiance to whomever was ruler in the land you came from. Each state has a different method of archiving Naturalization papers. For a large fee you can belong to Ancestry.com's files which purport to have this data. Normally in the 1860 time frame there will be very little information on the document. The several I have located (Iowa, Wisconsin etc.) contain Name, Arrival date, and a signature on a form which indicates you renounce allegiance to the foreign power. Much more informative might be his Pension files, if he got one, from NARA. In there you might find relatives, sworn statements as to injuries or reason for the pension, and even fights between wives for the pension money etc. Mike [email protected] wrote: > > Hello, > I am seeking information on a Ferdinand Frank Weigand (or varient) > who immigrated to New York 1/9/1862 and almost immediately signed up for the > Civil War. Hello, I am seeking information on a Ferdinand Frank Weigand (or varient) who immigrated to New York 1/9/1862 and almost immediately signed up for the Civil War. He enlisted as private on January 14th 1862 for the Union. Enlisted company K, 58th infantry regiment New York. Reenlisted in company K, 58th infantry regiment New York on 3/30/1864. He mustered out of company K, 58th infantry New York on 10/1/1865 in Nashville TN. He was born approx. 8/5/1834. His father's name was Jacob, or included Jacob. They may have been German, however family info has Ferdinand and his father being born Bern Switzerland, of which I can find no record. I would like to find his naturalization papers if possible. A family member I have lost touch with said he had a copy of some form written in German from New York, perhaps a baptismal certificate?? I don't know the reasons he would need that but perhaps for the citizenship? He ended up in Butler PA and married Hannah/Sharlotte Vogeley. They probably married around 1866. He was on the 1870 census there. It was noted on several sources his profession was Jeweler/ watchmaker.... clocks etc... Any help on his information would be appriciated! Thanks, Renee
Roy, I've gone through my list of Confederate soldiers with the surname of Braswell and found no soldiers listed as Chaplain. Out of 299 men with this surname, the breakdown is as follows: Captains - 2 1st Lieutenants - 3 2nd Lieutenants - 1 3rd Lieutenants - 1 Sergeant Majors - 1 1st Sergeants - 2 Sergeants - 5 Corporals - 12 Privates - 272 Edward Harding Washington, NC http://ehardingwbtsancestors.homestead.com/Index.html

Roy There are at HDS (civilwardata.com) under Confederates, 289 Braswell's listed (HDS is a subscription database) and at Soldiers and Sailors (free) http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/ there are 375 Braswell's listed. These are lists of men of the name that served in the CSA. As to Chaplains, that category is not searchable so the sources would have to be regimental histories etc. a long and tedious task. Perhaps a search at NARA would turn up a file dedicated to chaplains, but I would imagine that almost any company could have a preacher/minister in it listed as a soldier, who performed services for his group. The only real place that would show up is in letters home or regimental histories. If you are searching a special locale where a specific individual came from, the most likely source would be his hometown newspaper. Sorry I couldn't help more. Dear Edward Harding, Your quick responses to the request for the Bradwell surname was impressive. I wonder if you could help me locate any information on the following people who may have served in the Confederacy. Hopefully I will be able to find out which regiments they served in and then go to the State Archives. Whatever you can do would be greatly appreciated. Cutrer, Isaac Wesley (from Osyka MS, or New Orleans) Jones, James (a blacksmith, MS) Lowery, Paul Sanford (Meridian MS) Edwards, Marcus Lafayette (Meridian MS) many thanks fin advance, Fithian
