    3. Thanks, Marsha. I"ll let you know. I did talk to the folks at WVU. They don't have it but plan to order it after July 1, when the new budget year starts. I'm also going to check West Virginia Wesleyan tomorrow. They have a great Civil War Collection too. Among other things, they have all of the Virginia regimental histories published by Howard. I was surprised to find them there. Thanks. 3. Sara, I don't know if you'd want to spend any money getting records for Andrew Jordan, but if so, you might want to get a copy of Andrew Jordan's Service Record. I've used both the National Archives and Broadfoot Publishing Company for this and I prefer going through Broadfoot. The cost is a bit more, but you don't have to wait forever to get the copies, nor have to fill out any applications. You may or may not find out all you're searching for in a Service Record, but at least you'd know more about him. Broadfoot's website for ordering records is http://www.soldiersearch.com/index.html Edward

    2. Thank you so much. I hail from the Blackman, Jordan fellows. I'm trying to find out if Andrew Jordan died in battle. He appears on the 1860 Barnwell Cty, SC census, then his wife (Susannah) appears on the 1870 Barnwell Cty, SC census living with a son. Have any idea how I could find this info? 3. While researching at State Archives in Charleston, WV, I learned that Broadfoot Publishing has the 100 volume set of Supplement to the Army Official Records available. According to the Broadfoot website this set contains: "The greatest contribution to Civil War history since the OFFICIAL RECORDS." Arranged like the Official Records __ chronologically with entries by subject, etc. What Does the Supplement Contain? . * SOLDIERS: Names & Information __Twice as many names as does the original Official Records * PLACES: Names & Information __ Thousands of creeks, crossroads, ferries, fords, mills, etc. * RECORDS OF EVENTS & ITINERARIES: 299 reels of transcribed microfilm * OFFICIAL REPORTS: All the official reports, Union and Confederate, left out of the original publication * THE INDEX: 5 Vols. 3. The James Samuel which you list is a young nephew of the one which I am looking for... My James Samuel was the brother of Abraham who married Mary Coates...Abraham was killed-in-action and is buried in Sharon Cemetery in Jones County. Mary remarried a Holyfield. Following a family story, two brothers went to War...only one returned...This would fit Abraham and James Samuel, however their oldest brother Zachariah also went to War but was deemed too old and sent back as a home guard...(He was born in 1814). Zachariah's son Jessie was a member of the 7th MS Infantry at Vicksburg, captured and paroled at least twice...was making his way to his Unit in FL when the War ended. >From: Don Ott <[email protected]> >Reply-To: [email protected] >To: [email protected] >Subject: Re: [CIVIL-WAR] J.S. 3. Help me if you can, please! I am searching for a copy of General Orders, No. 189, War Department which is embodied in "Instructions for making ordnance returns, prepared by the Ordnance Bureau, Washington, D.C., 1863" Among other things, it deals with the appointment of regimental armorers. I know that it is not to be found in the O.R. However, it is referred to in an 1863 report of Horace N. Fisher in the O.R. Thanks for anything you might be able to do for me on this. JOY

    3. Hi folks, So many families have photos of ancestors who still remain nameless after a hundred years or more Their families somehow failed to write the subjects names on the back of the photo. And then the photo becomes just another unknown picture of the past with anonymous family members. I am asking all readers to visit this web site and look carefully at the individual depicted. 2. Carol Botteron
    3. My ancestor Egbert Hixon (b. Medway, Mass. 1824) was in the 1st Mass. (Andrew) Sharpshooters in 1862 during the Peninsular Campaign. According to his diary he was pretty miserable. He wrote on July 23: "Wrote a letter to [illegible] W. Fisher but it won't do any good." Maybe he was trying to get a discharge. If he was, what sort of person might he have written to -- an elected official, or a judge, or a minister? I'm trying to figure out who Fisher was. Can't tell whether the illegible word was a title or a first name. Suggestions and pointers appreciated! Carol Botteron <[email protected]> Maintainer, Civil War Units File P.S. This ancestor died in 1864 of malaria that he caught in 1862. I wish he had got his discharge.

    1. Civil War Units File CWUNITS Call for Listings
    2. Carol Botteron
    3. Have you researched a U.S. Civil War unit or group? Are you willing and able to help others research that unit? The next version of the U.S. Civil War Units File (CWUNITS) will become available in late June. An announcement will be posted then. In the meantime I invite listings through Tuesday, June 27. Also welcome are reports of non-working addresses in other people's listings, updates to your own listings, etc. If you write to me, please do *NOT* include this message in your reply. My time and disk space are limited. Also please do *NOT* include attached files. Thanks! The purpose of the CWUNITS file is to let people list units, groups, battles, etc. that they have information on (from pension records, books, etc.) and are willing to help other people research. Typically the contact person had an ancestor who was in the unit, but re-enactors, history buffs, et al. are welcome. (This is *NOT* a list of re-enactment units.) People who are interested in a unit can send the contact person email and share information. If you have questions please read the FAQ first. If it doesn't answer your question, feel free to ask me. The following addresses no longer work. If you are one of these people or know how to contact one, please email me. Unless we find new addresses we'll have to delete their listings. [email protected] (George Contant) [email protected] (Walter G. Blenderman) [email protected] (Edwin Redkey) [email protected] [email protected] (Jason Kladiva) [email protected] (Ronald A. Mosocco) [email protected] Anyone who'd like to volunteer to be a contact, please send me email from the address where you'd like to be listed. If you are volunteering for more than one unit, it's OK to put them all in the same message. Please list your entries in this format (sample addresses are fake): Illinois (USA) 4th Illinois Cavalry, Co. F 1861-4 [email protected] http://www.fakesample.com/4thil 18th Reg. Ill. Infantry 1865 [email protected] (John Doe) (Somebody's Volunteers) Instructions -- include the following: Country (USA or CSA) and state. Start each entry with the number of the regiment or whatever. Years (if applicable, but not necessary). Your email address on each line. Your real name. If you have a web page for the unit, include the URL (but we need your email address and name too). Also please include a statement like "I volunteer to be a contact for this unit." This is so we can be sure that everyone we list understands what the file is for. This is a big project, and if you send listings in the wrong format we reserve the right to send them back for you to fix. If there's anything in your listings that is not obvious, tell me! If we can't get your listings complete and clear by the time I have to send the file to the uploaders, your listings cannot be included. If you already have listings in the file, there's no need to send them again. But if your address has changed, please tell me and send updated listings.
