    3. Sandra, Ancestry.com lists two soldiers named Gustavus Hill, one has a Jr, after the name and shows: "Enlisted as a Sergeant on 01 November 1861 Enlisted in Company F, 16th Infantry Regiment Kentucky<http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?&ti=0&db=hdsregiment&f0=769&f11=Union> on 21 December 1861." The other Gustavus Hill only has a comma after the name and shows: "Enlisted as a Private on 01 November 1861 Enlisted in Company F, 16th Infantry Regiment Kentucky<http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?&ti=0&db=hdsregiment&f0=769&f11=Union> on 21 December 1861." It would appear that these are two different men as the CW Soldiers and Sailors System: http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/<http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/> also lists them separately in Co F, 16th Rgmt, Kentucky Infantry, with same names, but no Jr or Sr on either; one's rank in Private and out Private, the other in 5 Sgt, out Private. It also lists this unit as being active from fall 1861 until July 1865 and it was attached to the 23 Corps part of the time. In addition, it lists a Gustavus Hill, Pvt, in Co G, 13th Rgmt, KY Inf, which unit was active from Dec 1861 to Jan 1865 and it also was attached part of the time to the 23 Corps. You might want to wait until you get the file from the NARA before trying to order anything else just to see whose file(s) you are going to get! I am not familiar with the KY State Archives, but MO has quite a lot of info on their soldiers, so might try that, as well. Les Williams

    3. Sandra, Yes, Broadfoot Publishing is quick, reliable, and doesn't cost but very little more than NARA. He served in the 16th Kentucky Infantry Volunteers CO F. His name is Agustavus Hill Sr. He served as Sergent of this unit. I was able to get his sons Augustavus Hill Jr who was a private in the same unit and they are coming in the mail. He is listed as Gustavus Hill Jr. They said they were not able to find Agustavus Hill Sr Records. I was told he is listed as Hustovas Hill. I have tried that to no avail also. I know that this regiment disband and become the veterans 16th in 1863 and he is not listed on it nor is his son. I was told the men not listed were sent to the 13th Kentucky Volunteers. I have not tried this Unit yet because I have not seen him listed in it. I also know this unit served with the US 23 Corps. Does anyone know any other way I might be able to send for his records to be found? Any help would sure be appreciated. I am trying to get headstones put up for him and his son. 3. Sara Civilwardatabase lists a Pvt. Andrew Jordan and a 2nd Lt. Andrew F Jordan serving in co H 14 South Carolina. It does not indicate if they/he survived or not. The two entries could be the same man since normally you mustered in again when you changed rank. You may want to check South Carolina Archives and see if they have information on your man. Mike [email protected] wrote: > Thank you so much. I hail from the Blackman, Jordan fellows. I'm trying to find out if Andrew Jordan died in battle. He appears on the 1860 Barnwell Cty, SC census, then his wife (Susannah) appears on the 1870 Barnwell Cty, SC census living with a son. Have any idea how I could find this info? Sara

    3. Does anyone know how musicians, fifers and drummers, were selected for each company in the Union Army? Did they learn the skills after they arrived, maybe as part of natural talent or did they already know how to play? Maybe a combination of the two??? Any help appreciated. Joy
