    3. Donna I searched those names in the military data that I have access to (Civilwardata.com and SSS), and did not find him though it doesn't mean he didn't serve not everyone is on a roster. There may have been something that happened to that family between 1860 and 1880. I found a John Amons in Cincinnati with the right age for the son and with the parents birth locations matching. He was at the home of an elderly lady where he was listed as grandson. The lady's surname is troublesome. It is difficult to decipher but doesn't look like Smith.... Census 1860 Cincinnati John J Amons age 27 b. Penn Mary J Amons age 25 b.Ohio John J Amons Jr age 5 b. Ohio Census 1880 Cincinnati Elsie Stevan age 69 b. Conn (Doesn't look like Smith...) John Amons age 25 grandson b.Ohio, father.b Penn, mother.b.Ohio There was also in 1900 a fellow named John Amons who did not know where his father was born and whose wife's name was Carrie. Might be the same fellow. At least there are some leads.... Mike Donna St. Felix wrote: > I have a missing person who disappeared during the Civil War. 3. To follow up a bit on Kassie's info below, you might consider ordering his Civil War Pension Record when and if you order his compiled military service record from NARA or Broadfoot Publishing Company. Sometimes there can be some good info in the pension application. Benjamin BAUMGARDNER was born in 1836 in Ohio, the son of David and Rebecca (Johnson) BAUMGARDNER. As of 1860 he was living in Rome IA and I am told he died in the Civil War in 1863. I have looked all over online for any information on him and have found nothing. Another family member wrote to the government about it and also received no information. BAUMGARDNER is misspelled so many ways that is all I can think of may be the problem. Any ideas how I could locate information on this man? Thank you for your time! 3. Clayton Library in Houston has microfilm records of, I believe, all who served in the War on both sides. There should be the same resource in other genealogical libraries in all of the country. Which side did your ancestor fight? Sons of Civil War Veterans has list of ancestors and veterans and I believe the Sons of the Grand Army of the Republic are another resource. How about NARA? Good luck.
