Hi, this is my first time posting on this list and I didn't even know that there was such a list so don't know if anyone can help me or not. My mom and dad met each other during a carnival stop in Blytheville, Arkansas in September 1931. I am not sure if the carnival was in Blytheville or a surrounding area. They have both passed on now and we, the children would love to know the name or the owner of the carnival outfit that would have been in that area at that time. My dad was a wrestler for carnival and he went by the name of Smokey. His real name was Kyle Phillips and my mother was a native of Blytheville. Her name was Merle Cavashere. This meeting produced a 43 year marriage and 4 children. We would just like to know if there is a way to find this information or if anyone else might know. Thanks Debbie from Illinois. ~Debbie in Central Illinois~
Hi Debbie; I don't know if this will help you in your search for information but it might give you some ideas to check out. The showman's "bible" for the past 100 years is now called Amusement Business (it was formally called the Billboard weekly). It deals with carnivals and I would suggest a letter to the editor with your query. Their address is as follows; Amusement Business, BPI Communications, Inc., 49 Music square West, Nashville, Tennessee 37203 (615/321-4250). There are numerous "showmans clubs" such as the Showmans Club, Gibsonton, FLA., Sarasota, FLA. and many others. I don't have addresses before me at this moment and will soon be leaving until evening (Pacific Coast Time). You might try to get the phone number and/or addresses from the yellow pages in the search engine Yahoo on their "Switchboard" or any other "yellow pages" directory for these towns. You might also check for Heart of America Showmans Club I think (not sure) it is in Little Rock. There is also a carnival historical society but I don't have time to research their address at the moment. This will give you something to go on. Get back to me if you don't get anywhere. Check out our show business web site at; http://www.wa.net/~djmoyer/ When I have some time I will try to get information on various carnival societies. Best Wishes, Donn and Nancy Moyer. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Debbie R." <dagran@davesworld.net> To: <CIRCUS-FOLK-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, March 25, 2001 7:55 AM Subject: [CIRCUS-FOLK] Query > Hi, this is my first time posting on this list and I didn't even know that there was such a list so don't know if anyone can help me or not.
