Hello Everyone, :o) My name is Linda Edwards and I am new to this list. I am hoping to make contact with people who worked for Mills Brothers 3-ring Circus, based out of Cleveland, OH, during the years of 1954/1955. Mills Bros. was owned & operated by 3 brothers, Jack, Jake, & Frank (?), Mills and ran from 1939-1966. They mostly traveled in the mid-western & north-eastern regions of the US, but they "imported" acts from England and this where my story begins. [I'll try to keep it ~really~ short.] In 1954, my deceased father-inlaw, Sidney EDWARDS [who also went by the name of Tony Laughton; was born & bred in England] was working for them as a "go-between" man for getting them British acts to perform with them back in the US. In Oct. 1954, my deceased mother-inlaw, Alma Victoria COX [who went by the name of Vicky; was born & bred in England] started working for them as well because Jack Mills was in London to find new acts for the 1955 season. He hired Vicky to be his secretary as well as be the Assistant Publicity Director, under Belle deStarr. On 27 Feb 1955, Southampton, Eng. Tony, Vicky, and the new acts left England, via the SS UNITED STATES, to come back to Ohio to get ready for the new season. From what I have gathered, Tony was now working as a clown [could possibly have used the name of "Cilly Dilly"] and Vicky, while still Jack's secretary, was now the Publicity Director. On 28 May, 1955, Tony & Vicky left the circus. [Why they left so early in the season, we don't know...yet.] {A bit unrelated: Tony also worked for Gatti Circus, based out of S. California, during the 1970's as a Circus promoter as well as John Strong Circus.] If any of this sounds familiar to you or you know someone who worked for Mills Bros. during that time period, I would ~LOVE~ to hear from you as my husband, Stephen, knew very little about his parents [~long~ story] and I've been helping him for the past 13 years to find out information on them. If you would like to see photos of Vicky [this might help to jog someone's memory] I have created a website for her and the URL will be listed below. Thank you so much for your time and consideration.
