James, I realize the rolls are not perfect and was not/am not complaining about the difference in the blood quantum of David Osborne Fisher and that of his brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, etc. I just wondered how he got to be 3/8ths? How do you get to be 3/8ths of 'anything'!? I plan to send for his enrollment packet mainly because I'm hoping there is some clue as to the date of birth, date of death of his mother, Martha "Patsy" Hays. I'm not even sure of the spelling of her surname. Angelyn ---- James Brown <[email protected]> wrote: > I was born Choctaw and have lived in tribal community my entire life. The Dawes rolls are not perfect, but it is the only base, members of the Five Civilized Tribes have to prove lineage to an ancestor/ancestors on the rolls, to satisfy the requirements of the federal governments as well as their respective tribal membership departments. I believe errors were made by the Dawes Commission in recording the blood quantum of some, including members of the same family. However, this as I see it is the best way to prove and or calculate quantum. This is an old argument. I have reason to believe that the tribal government which I am a member of, stands behind this method of proving Native American heritage. I had to smile recently when I heard my tribal council representative say to me in a discussuion about proving lineage, " James I was born Choctaw". I thought I had coined the phrase. Angelyn, my online friend, I would never complain about any remarks you made, you are always so positive and helpful. I apoligize ( over and over ) .My response was only to say that I am a tribal member that may not agree with the past actions of the Dawes Commissions, but I 100% endorse blood quantum. My son , Joshie read this post and I think you helped put him and a friend in touch or gave them an email addesss of a man knowledgeable in " all things Choctaw" sometime in the past. He read your post and tells me, " Dad you better say something nice back to that Angelyn lady, I think you hurt her feelings". So I'm sorry if you thought I was responding negaively to your post. In fact my apologies to anyone if my opinion seemed offensive.
