    2. I have copies of "The Mississippi Choctaw Investment Co" papers, dated 1918, signed by my ancestor, for " services to be rendered in presenting before the different branches of the government, in order for them to share in the tribal property belonging to the Choctaw tribes". I think I have determined this was a cruel hoax, but my question is where do I start to research the fact that my ancestor signed these papers, as I did not know he was Indian/part Indian. He was James Leon Chambless, 1904-1987, son of John Henry Chambless, 1882-1916, and Josephine (Jodie) Skinner, 1886-1930. What is my first step in finding the Choctaw Indian connection to my ancestors? Fran Bolton

    3. Fran, begin by looking at Dawes Roll. You can also look at Eastern Cherokee Roll taken in 1907-08 (a.k.a. Guion Miller roll) In addition this roll includes Choctaw, Creek and other Southern Indian descendants. . You can find it on several websites. Go to a search engine such as http://www.google.com type in Dawes Roll. Several sites will come up. A good starting place is Judy Whites' Native American Resource Center at http://www.accessgenealogy.com/native I believe you will find this helpful. 1. [CHOCTAW-SE] Miss. Choctaw Investment Co.

    3. Fran: You need to trace your family in Miss. via the federal census and try to connect them to someone listed on either the 1831 Armstrong roll or the 1855 Cooper roll. These were both done before the removals to Oklahoma. I have both rolls if you need a lookup. dusty ----- Original Message ----- From: <Jfrbol@aol.com> To: <CHOCTAW-SOUTHEAST-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, September 25, 2002 6:34 PM Subject: Re: [CHOCTAW-SE] Re: Meaning of "Choctaw" > I have copies of "The Mississippi Choctaw Investment Co" papers, dated 1918, > signed by my ancestor, for " services to be rendered in presenting before the > different branches of the government, in order for them to share in the > tribal property belonging to the Choctaw tribes".
