Your people may have been among the ones who were not removed West, but were left to struggle on their own in MS, AL, & LA The cases I mentioned were all going one since before the Civil War. The paperwork continued to be generated for YEARS. The Choctaws who were left in Alabama lived around Mobile on public land. The citizens of Mobile petitioned the Mayor to get them moved away to the West. From 1832- 1860 correspondence was generated (letters were written for Choctaws by local officials) between agencies of federal government and these Choctaw (known as Mississippi Choctaw) seeking help. The government agents were defrauding the Choctaws out of their "scrip"; (scrip was certificate for land in Indian Territory Oklahoma) attorneys were involved saying they would take the Indians' cases for the scrip.(I have a chapter on this in my book.) The Cooper Roll, named for Douglas Cooper who took the Roll, was taken in 1855-56 in Al., MS & LA. Most names are phonetically spelled Choctaw names, arranged by clan names and location --for example: "Six Towns Clan," Jasper and Newton County, MS and Mobile, AL.
