Your particular question about how to order a copy of the application and how much it costs is at: http://ssa.custhelp.com/cgi- bin/ssa.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_sid=wEjZF8mg&p_lva=&p_faqid=138&p_created= 955621953&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPTEmcF9ncmlkc29ydD0mcF9yb3dfY250PTMxJnBfY2F0X2x2bDE9MjAmcF9wYWdlPTE* &p_li= (Wow! Long URL) Or just go to the Social Security home page at: http://www.ssa.gov/ and in the "Questions" box near the top, select "Miscellaneous" and hit "Go". Subject #6 is the one you want. You may find some of the other subjects interesting as well. As to when SS started, the first cards were issued in 1936, but many occupations did not require them at first. It was probably after 1950 that most people started needing a SS card. Merritt
