American Heritage Dictionary-mulatto 1. a person having one white and one Negro parent 2. any person of mixed Caucasion and Negro ancestry. {Spanish "mulato," young mule from "mulo" mule from Latin "mulus," mule} However, on some census, it was apparently used to indicate "color" and not necessarily a precise racial lineage.
