    3. All the territory that became Indian Territory was originally part of the Arkansas territory. East of the river was more heavily populated by white settlers, and when they complained, IT was moved across the river. This is one reason why Ft. Smith in Arkansas has connections to Choctaw history. Earlier someone was looking for information about Choctaws in Arkansas. I believe that you can find a discussion of that in DeRosier's The Removal of the Choctaw Indians (1970). It may be out of print, but you might be able to find a used copy on Amazon.com. Apparently, the Choctaw were originally given land in Arkansas, but the white settlers complained. Consequently, the U.S. govt. took that land back. Most of the Choctaw moved into Indian Territory. However, some may have stayed.
