Sir: thank you for the email, shortly after i posted, I mentioned this to my uncle, he told me somrthing similar to what you just posted. I did not intend any offense and certainly wasn't disagreeing with Mr. Rowell, I have tried to learn everything I could about Choctaw history and our people, I would never disagree with something my elders had said, I don't know MR. Rowell's email address, but I believe it was Ron Rowell, that I responded to. If you know him, please tell him I apologize if i hurt his feelings. I hope this discussion doesn't annoy to many people. The spelling Choctaw is the nearest equivalent way to show the glottal stop at the end of the first syllable using a Roman alphabet. Many Native American languages have glottal stops. Brooke: No one can prove or disprove legends. They are what they are - oral traditions that have been passed down through the generations. I think the facts that the Choctaw and Chickasaw languages are so similar, and all the geographical details of this "legend" are accurate, show that there is some truth at it's root. dusty ----- Original Message ----- From: brooke patton <bluebird@crosstel.net> To: <CHOCTAW-SOUTHEAST-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, September 18, 2002 8:32 PM Subject: Re: [CHOCTAW-SE] Re: Meaning of "Choctaw" > I'm confused, I thought Chahta and Chiksa, brothers was a legend. Choctaw is a mispronunciation of the word a certain Tribe of Indians called themselves..it actually sounded more like Chata or Chahta...I don't know what it actually means because it doesn't say in the dictionary...But that was a really good question...and I wonder if anyone really knows what it means.... Some folks call "origin stories" legends, or myths. All cultures have origin stories/legends/myths - the one most Western (read Western European) people know is the Adam and Eve story/myth/legend (that's the majority, but it isn't a huge majority anymore). All cultures through the ages have asked questions about where they came from, and now have their stories to explain how the People came into being; how animals, places, and people got started and why, and how they have the traits that make them what or who they are. Choctaw in our language is "Chahta." Chahta was the name of one of the brothers, Chahta and Chiksa, who led the tribe from the direction of the setting sun to Mississippi, according to one of our two origin stories. The brothers split when they came to the Mississippi, with Chiksa going north and Chahta south. Their bands became the Choctaw and Chickasaw tribes. Ron

Actually, I am interested in who they were related to, and who they were married to. Most of the individuals in article 2 of the supplement had a connection to someone prominent, which is why they were named.
