    1. [CHOCTAW-SE] Margaret McCoy Thompson
    2. The following website is devoted to the descendants of William Thompson and Margaret McCoy. http://members.aol.com/txcherind/thompson-mccoy_chickasaw-choctaw/ If you cannot access the site, then type in "McCoy-Thompson" in the search window at Google. There's lots of information here. When I examined the papers in the Scott Dumas application, I found some papers from these Thompsons mistakenly filed in the Dumas boxes. That's how I came upon the site. Kitty

    3. Your people may have been among the ones who were not removed West, but were left to struggle on their own in MS, AL, & LA The cases I mentioned were all going one since before the Civil War. The paperwork continued to be generated for YEARS. The Choctaws who were left in Alabama lived around Mobile on public land. The citizens of Mobile petitioned the Mayor to get them moved away to the West. From 1832- 1860 correspondence was generated (letters were written for Choctaws by local officials) between agencies of federal government and these Choctaw (known as Mississippi Choctaw) seeking help. The government agents were defrauding the Choctaws out of their "scrip"; (scrip was certificate for land in Indian Territory Oklahoma) attorneys were involved saying they would take the Indians' cases for the scrip.(I have a chapter on this in my book.) The Cooper Roll, named for Douglas Cooper who took the Roll, was taken in 1855-56 in Al., MS & LA. Most names are phonetically spelled Choctaw names, arranged by clan names and location --for example: "Six Towns Clan," Jasper and Newton County, MS and Mobile, AL. 3. I never knew the daughter's name. I just know of several Choctaws who lived in Alabama who paid money to Weir, took their birth certificates, baptismal records, etc. and gave to him. Their stories all say they never heard from him. They never gave up hope that something would be done to help them, that is until he died. In the Weir case people sent in $4 from all over the country, but the majority were from southern states--MS, AL, LA In the files I looked at in Washington, there were only one or two letters from disgruntled/angry people who had sent in money and got nothing in return-not even a letter acknowledging contribution. There is no list of names of people who sent in money in this file. In this case, rumors have it that all Weir's personal records were stored in the basement of his daughter's house and she will not talk about it. There are other cases (for example Choctaw Nation v. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Bennett Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/4gC.2ACE/989 Message Board Post: Trying to find info on ancestors of Mary Estelle and Elizabeth Bennett. These sisters were supposed to be part Choctaw Indian. Officials came to have Mary Estelle sign legal papers (re: land transaction?) because she was part Choctaw. For the majority of her life, Mary Estelle BENNETT lived in Ascension Parish, Louisiana. She died in Prairieville, Ascension Parish, LA. She was married to Leonce J. Henry.

    2. SANDYBANKS Computer Services
    3. Looking for info on Patience Jane Roberts, Mary Roberts Wright, and "Bud" Roberts. Patience married James W. Sawyers, Mary married Richard Wright, and Bud married Lottie Brown. Patience is buried in Bentley Oklahoma, Atoka County in an unmarked grave in a Choctaw cemetery. Does anything sound familiar to anyone? They were believed to be Choctaw with stories of one of their ancestors having been on the trail of tears. Thanks Sandra __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!?
