It begins with a "Reservation Roll", meaning it was the governments attempt to see exactly how many indians they were dealing with......... and this census,or roll, was taken in 1817. The book then takes you to what the government called the Emigration Roll", which was taken between 1817 - 1835. This was to create a list of those Cherokee who agreed to move west to be settled in the reservation created for them in what is now Arkansas. However, those who did move to this Arkansas Reservation were moved again in 1828 to the Indian Territory (Okalahoma) because the white settlers wanted that land. These people, once settled i the Indian Territory came to be known as the "Old Settlers'" because they moved west voluntarily and at their own expense. They fared better than those who were forced to march by the government on what we call the Trail of Tears, although they were also resented by many who were forced to move under governemnt supervision. Next in the book is the Henderson Roll, taken in 1835, This was a census of voer 16,000 Cherokee who were residign in Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, and North Carolina who were to be removed to Indian Territory by the government. Next was the Mullay Roll, taken in 1848 which is a census ( or roll) of the Cherokee who remained in North Carolina after the removal of 1838 ( Trail of Tears). Next was the Siler Roll of 1851 which was a list of those Cherokee remaining in the east who were entitled to a payment as agreed by the government for giving up much of their land. The 1852 census or roll called the Chapman Roll was a list of those Cherokee who actually received payment. These would also have to have been listed on the Siler Roll to get payment..if dead, the payment went ( or was supposed to go) to that persons heirs. Thh Swetland Roll was taken in 1869 and it was mainly a list of those Cherokee who remained in the east in North Carolina after the 1848 Mullay Roll, this was done so that Congress would release and agree to payment to those Cherokee. The Volumn II pertains to those who moved to the west. You can email me direct if you want to. I will try to help you sort through the rolls. It is not easy to determine if ...or which .....of the Brown's you found may be the correct ones. When was this Brown born? Where? Those two dates will help to determine if he is on one or more of these rolls. Names of his wife, and chidlren are also helpful to narrow down the list. A lot of things you have to search for. You can contact me anytime. My email is: kwoneenee@yahoo.com Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
