    1. [CHOCTAW] nations remembered and other books
    2. Hi Donna, glad you could peek in, if just to say hi. I wanted to let you know real quick that i read the book you recommended, "Nations Remembered" by Theda Perdue and it is wonderful. In case you didn't know, it is based on the Pioneer Papers I have posted on my surname board and that are located at the state historical society. The book is a refreshing change from the government-info-based books about the removal and territory. Other books I recommend: "The Dawes Commission and the Allotment of the Five Civilized Tribes," 1893-1914 by Kent Carter ---a scholarly book. "After the Trail of Tears: The Cherokees Struggle," by William McLoughlin, University of North Carolina Press -- I am just now reading. "The Five Civilized Tribes," by Grant Foreman, OU press --- he is a leading authority who was in charge of the WPA project that resulted in Pioneer Papers. OU Press "Indian Removal," by Grant Foreman, OU Press -- just bought, havent read yet, but see above. "History of the Choctaw, Chickasaw and Natchez Indians,' by H.B. Cushman, edited by Angie Debo --- an indepth historical prospective. OU Press "Indians of North American, The Choctaw,"by Jesse O. McKee -- part of a series that is a basic primer Anything by Angie Debo. The ones I have read are "And Still the Waters Run, The Betrayal of the Five Civilized Tribes," and "The Rise and Fall of the Choctaw Republic." These are about allotments and how Choctaws handled them. I also hear "Geronimo" is good. She is an Oklahoma treasure. OU Press. "Choctaws and Missionaries in Mississippi, 1818-1918," Clara Sue Kidwell. -- self-explanatory; a good view of the Folsoms and their role in Choctaw History. OU Press. "Way Down Yonder in the Indian Nation," by Michael Wallis (of Tulsa), St. Marten's Griffin -- just plain ole fun. Except for the McKee book, these are all widely available in paperback.
