My great grandfather's name was C.B. (Charles Bailey?) Tatum, b. abt 1848. My great grandmother's father disowned her because she married CBT (as us cousins now refer to him). They married in 1885, had five children, and then he disappeared, presumably murdered, in 1897. They lived in Clarksville, Texas, and CBT, according to his children, 'worked' in IT...either as a deputy (no proof, at all) or an interpreter...he supposedly spoke five languages and was part Indian. Our grandparents remember going fishing on the Kiamichi with Indian relatives. CBT is not in any of the four censuses (1850, 1860, 1870, nor 1880) in any state. Us cousins have years and years of research doing line by line searches for him. He 'appeared' out of nowhere in 1885 when he married my g grandmother in Franklin County, Texas...and then 'disappeared' in 1897. We have submitted our DNA to the Tatum DNA project and we seem to have close connections with the Tatums from Alabama. Also, according to our grandparents, CBT had a brother named Andrew Jackson Tatum...and I found one who seemed to fit the bill. Andrew Jackson Tatum, b. 1853, d. 1928. His wife was Alice Henson and their children were Dock, Jay, Thomas, Lula, and Sitting Bull. According to the 1900 IT Census, Andrew was 1/2 Choctaw...his father (Tatum) was white and was born in Alabama, his mother was Choctaw and was born in IT. Andrew and family lived in Vian, Sequoyah County, Oklahoma; however, he died in Tulsa and was buried in Oaklawn. There is no information regarding his parents on his death certificate. I sincerely appreciate any help/advice that you can give me. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 3. Sandee, One more thing. The 1910 census, Sequoyah Co., Vian, Dist 209 has Jay Tatum, Della??, Sitting Bull, Thomas, Doc, Earl. They have the color/race as MU. All born in Oklahoma Jay was a widow and 60 years old. Della?? was daughter. 3. Sandee, You should check the WWI Draft Registration Cards for Oklahoma. Draft Reg. Cards are a great source of research information for the most part. There is a Dock Tatum who was listed as Indian, born 12 Aug 1897. Reg. in Pontotoc Co. There is a Thomas Tatum who was listed as Caucausian, born 5 Oct 1891. Reg. in Pontotoc Co. There are other Tatums but either white or black. Author: sandee Surnames: Tatum Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/topics.ethnic.natam.nations.choctaw.choctawnat/2859/mb.ashx Message Board Post: What does one do to trace your Choctaw roots when your ancestors apparently did not register on the rolls? I believe my g grandfather was 'disowned' when he came to Texas and married my g grandmother; however, I believe that I've found his brother in the 1900 and 1910 Censuses; however, he wasn't registered on the rolls even though, according to the censuses, he was 1/2 Choctaw. His wife, who was 1/4 Cherokee, and their five children were on the Dawes Rolls. The children were listed as being 3/8 Indian which, given the math, substantiates that their father was 1/2 Indian. I don't know where to turn to...and would sincerely appreciate any suggestions someone may provide. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 3. Is this the brother's family you are looking for? They are listed as enrolled in the Cherokee Tribe and Alice's parents names are mispelled as Heuson. "J.A. Tatum" doesn't have blood quantum listed with the Cherokee Nation, but Alice is listed as 1/4. The children are all listed as 3/8 so J.A. Tatum must have some blood quantum or they aren't his children. http://www.accessgenealogy.com/native/finalroll.php?s_tribe=Cherokee&s_last=&s_first=&s_middle=&s_sex=&s_blood=&s_card=1207&s_roll=&s_misc=&s_type= Cherokee Heuson Benjamin 0 M 1207 P Cherokee Heuson Polly 0 F 1207 P Cherokee Tatum Alice 37 F 1/4 1207 3319 BB Cherokee Tatum Dock 3 M 3/8 1207 3324 BB Cherokee Tatum J A 0 M 1207 P Cherokee Tatum Jay 6 M 3/8 1207 3323 BB Cherokee Tatum Lula 14 F 3/8 1207 3320 BB Cherokee Tatum Sitting Bull 10 M 3/8 1207 3321 BB Cherokee Tatum Thomas 7 M 3/8 1207 3322 BB "gc-gateway@rootsweb.com" <gc-gateway@rootsweb.com> wrote: This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. 3. I guess I don't understand, you say they aren't registered then state that they were. If they were on the roll you should contact the Choctaw Nation . All you do for membership is trace your line back to the kids on the roll...blood lines only with documentation, like full form birth and or death certs. Choctaw require no amount...so regardless of full, or 1/64 and on, you can still be a member. Give them a call. Carla
