Hi to all, I have been asked how McCurtain County Census are listed. At the F.H.C. the girl could only pull up the Choctaw Indian Reservation. What was she doing wrong? We need a 1900 to 1910 Census for McCurtain County. Is there a special way for the census to be pulled up on the Computer. And, Jacque in Idaho we really need your help also because of your experience with ancestors in McCurtain Count! Hey we want anybody's experiences that will get us what we need. This time we after the white folks!!! That's odd for me! But, I am after the Stones of McCurtain County Oklahoma and Polk County Arkansas.Should have we been looking for Indian Territory? Thanks Ellen and Frankie 1st Cousins researching the Stone Family together. Us2Scotts@worldnet.att.net Sto4us@aol.com
The LDS has the 1900 Soundex on Microfilm..I would order the microfilm for the Surname Stone and it will give you a lot of information and also exactly where they are located in McCurtain County...The soundex will give you the head of household, birthplace, age year of birth check it out..let me know if I can help..LBCane@aol.com
Exactly what are your looking for in the McCurtain County, Census? LBCane@aol.com let me know..I might be able to help...
For 1900 you would need to check the 1900 Choctaw Nation federal census, since that was before statehood. 1910-1920 and coming up in a few months, 1930, check the counties needed. Haven't seen the census on computer at FHC, but you can order the microfilm rolls. Hello Everyone, Pardon the bandwidth, but I am trying to help this lady. She is "tracking down all references to Indians to help find" her great-grandmother, and I thought you kind folk just might be able to help her. She is not currently on our lists, so please make sure if you reply to *her*, use *her* email address, or reply to me and I will forward your responses to her. I appreciate your patience and any help you can provide. The information she gives is a bit sketchy, so 'helpful suggestions' may be all you can provide. Thanks! >----- Original Message ----- >From: Kimball, Zhanna G <Zhanna.Kimball@usa.xerox.com> >To: Kevin D Clapp <mac-tire@nts-online.net> >Sent: Tuesday, December 07, 1999 7:52 AM >Subject: Looking for my great-grandmother > > Dear Kevin: > Do you have any info on a JESSIE LOCKE, who was my ggrandmother... > She was part Indian (don't know anything more about that) and was born in PA > around 1850-1860. I also looked for any Norris names, but found none. I am sending a copy of this reply along to several other lists I am in, in hopes that someone there may be able to provide you with info. As far as "tracking down all references to Indians to help find her" - I am on several lists that help people search for Indian ancestors, and since I am sending a copy of this to those lists, it may be that someone might either recognize the names you mention, or may be able to offer additional suggestions, beyond what I have, to help you . A couple of other suggestions, you might try looking for a list concerned with the NORRIS surname, and also lists for the area in PA and KS here on rootsweb, if you can narrow down the associated counties in each state, or even just the general area, for example: Southeast PA (SE-PA-L ?) or Northwest KS (NW-KS-L ?). Also, although you do not mention what tribe she may have belonged in, there ARE various rolls of Indian Tribes that were created, such as the "Dawes", "Miller", and others. You may be able to locate her, whether she was of Indian blood, or married into an Indian tribe, by searching among the various rolls. You also mentioned that your ggrandmother placed your grandfather in the Denver Orphanage. I am assuming that is Denver, as in Colorado? You said that she moved west from PA to KS, but didn't mention a link, other than the Orphanage, to CO. You might try searching records in the CO area, and even trying to search for info with the Orphanage (note: it can be very frustrating to try to get usable info from Orphanages/Adoption agencies, depending on the Privacy laws of the State they are located in). You might also check with the LDS (Latter Day Saints - Mormon) Family Centers - it can be very surprising to find out how much info that they have collected from all the different sources for genealogy! I have located several 'missing links' in my family history through their records. One last suggestion, when you ask on lists for help, it is best to provide as MUCH information as you possibly have *available* if you have it, such as: "I am looking for (full name, including maiden name if a female), who was born in (date - day/month/year) in (location - city, county, state). His/her parents were (father's name and mother's name including maiden name, if available). He/she married (spouse's name) in (date) in (location). They moved to (location) in (date). Children include: (names) born in (dates) in (locations). Other information I have includes (whatever other hints, clues, facts you may have)." The reason for this is, although someone might not have any info on the PERSON, they MAY say, "Wow, I don't know who this person is, but I have a cousin that might be related to the spouse (or an uncle that was born in the same town that year, or whatever)." I have had a few people contact me with information that has really helped me, for some of the strangest connections to the info I have provided - nicknames, places, events, etc. You never know what clue might trigger a response! A friend of mine once got a reply from the son of a neighbor of his grandparents, who recognized the name of the family pet of her grandparents, although he had forgotten her grandparent's names! You never know.... Keep in touch, as I have several URL addresses for various locations that you may find useful. Good luck in your search! Kevin Clapp mac-tire@nts-online.net
