My name is Vanessa Tigert Birrell. My grandmother was an original enrollee, Nettie Marea CHANDLER Tigert, born in 1906. She was one of nine children, born to James Chandler and Nettie Marea WEST Chandler, who was a full-blood Choctaw. They settled around Francis, Oklahoma. James Chandler started a mill, and donated land for a church and a cemetery near Francis. -----Original Message----- From: Jacque Hopkins Wolski [mailto:hopkinsj@ida.net] Sent: Saturday, January 22, 2000 2:30 PM To: CHOCTAW-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [CHOCTAW] Welcome & Roll Call Hello everyone, Boy, we sure have a lot of subscribers to this list, over 170, more than I thought there would be, but would like to say I think it is great. Now if we all could just find our ancestors, that would be even greater. Anyway, since we have a lot of new subscribers, I am suggesting that we have a Roll Call. For those of you that are new to mailing lists, it means to post/send a message to the list of who or what you are looking for pertaining to your Choctaw ancestors who came to Oklahoma. Please include as much information as you possibly can/have such as dates and places. The more information you put in the message, the more someone may be able to help you. Hi, My name is Eula Wooton Jones, I am searching for my mother's fathers people. His name was James Samson Welch. His mother was full blood Choctaw . or so I am told. I have not been able to find proof so far. James was born about 1864 place unknown. He married Margaret Elizabeth Duncan about 1891. They had two children, James Edward January 12, 1892. Bulah May Ann (my mother) February 16, 1894. Jamed Died April 18, 1896. I am not sure but I think he died in McCurtain County, Oklahoma. I haven't been able to find anything about him, I am beginning to think they found him under a leaf rather than for him to be born to someone. LOL. I am anxious to find anything. I understand he was a member of the Snake Indian faction

The other names are so intertwined with the Choctaw by living side by side in the Choctaw Nation. My Great Grandma Ida Mae Irndoff Boswell Rose Blevins lived in the Chickasaw Nation. Am researching JIMMY RICE who may have been Choctaw or Cherokee. We've heard that he came from GA to OK where he died in October 1879, possibly in Loco, IT. He was the 3rd husband of Minerva Catherine "Callie" Ward, married in 1879 in Gainesville, TX. Any information will be appreciated.

I was told that my great, great grandmother was choctaw. Her name was Emaline Lowery married to Frances Marion McKnight. They were married in choctaw county Missisippi. Both were born in Alabama but moved to Mississippi. Emaline's mother and father were James Peter Carter Lowery, and Eliza Collier. They were from Alabama and moved to Mississippi. Then Eliza's parents were Abraham Collier and Kaziah Bagwell. Anyway I can't get any information on the McKnight part. Or find where the choctaw is supposed to come in at. Also while looking for my mother's people I ran across Blount's on a surname list and this is my father's people so I as wondering if he had any choctaw in him. He always said black irish and a little spanish from his grandma she was a Hill that really was a Hildago. I was told they changed some of the Hildagos to Hill when they come from spain. so I am one lost puppy lol. I think maybe to describe my family is more like heinz 57. But hey I still want to know as I would be proud to find choctaw or spanish in my line thanks for any help you can give Julie Moton jmoton3557@aol.com my friends call me J.J. p.s. Can anyone tell me what black irish is? Is it different from plain irish?
The address for NARA to obtain Dawes information is: National Archives, Southwest Region Building 1, Dock 1 501 West Felix Street Fort Worth, TX 76115 We found it better to send credit card information rather than a check, or if you send a check, make the dollar amount blank and indicate on the notation line, "not to exceed $" (the dollar amount). Once our bill was $40 and once it was $8 so there could be a variation depending on the amount of information requested. Also make a notation that you want copies of Dawes enrollment or land allotment jackets and any other information on the individual. I am researching my ancesters and their names are: ELMORE-SHIRLEY-LANDRUM-SKELTON-RICHARDSON-SULLIVAN-WARD-BLOUNT-[MOORE ?]. These people lived in and around Washington and Choctaw and Elmore and Marengo Counties in Alabama from mid 1800's til now some came from Georgia and South Carolina and some came from east-central Mississippi and some moved on to New Boston, Bowie County, Texas, and down to Mobile, Alabama. Was told by my moma that her grandma a Landrum that she was full- Choctaw Indian, but have not been able to prove that as of yet. But my mom is 83 and very remembering with details, so I do not doubt her, as she says she went with her gran to help pick cotton in the fields on the Peavy Plantation and remembers the stories that her gran told her. Only confirmation that I get from cousins are [Black Dutch or Irish] once in a while one of the older generation will admit a little bit of Indian but nothing else. My mom does remember her moma's sister coming down and taking names for the BIA, sometime in the late 1950's. I do have dates of birth and death and marriages for the most part on the people that I have listed, just to much to write unless someone is interested. PLEASE REPLY TO DDRiche@aol.com. SINCERELY, Diane Richardson DeLaughter

I have tons of info to share and administer the IMPSON mailing list. To subscribe contact IMPSON-L-request@rootsweb.com or rlang90547@aol.com. Hi List, I joined because I saw a post about a couple of ASKEWs that were on the Choctaw rolls. My Askews claimed to be Black Dutch, and I am checking out possible meanings. I was unable to get in touch with the person who posted about the Askews being Choctaw. If anyone can help, I would really appreciate it. Mitzi

I am trying to find the Choctaw roots of Eli Forbes who is listed in the Indian archives (Choctaw Vol. 20, page 362). He was born in Miss. and went to I.T. after the Civil War. Eli was born March 21, 1854 in Marion Co. Miss. and died Dec.28, 1894 in I.T. In the archive information, he requested moving from the Choctaw Terr. to the Chickasaw Terr.....because he was a member of the Choctaw Nation. He claimed membership through his mother Rebecca (?) who married William W. Forbes. Eli was granted permission and went to Blue Co. (Love). We think he was living in Jack's Fork before his request. Eli married Harriet Elizabeth Cushman, who was born in 1862 in I.T. We think she may have also had Indian heritage. Her father was Joshua (Patrick) Cushman and her mother Mary (Polly Anna) Harriman. The Cushmans claimed Ill.as their birth place. We "assumed" the state. However, we now think it was the Ill. Terr. in I.T. Our other relation is J.M. Curbo/Kerbo et. al. from Tenn./Ala. He may have been Cherokee. Deffinately had Indian heritage. Was also in I.T. and not an intruder! Carmen McDaniel Forbes
