Hi list, While going through my files, I found this newspaper clipping and thought it could possibly help someone out. It was sent to me several years ago by a genealogy cousin. There is no date on it, or newspaper name. From the age and birth date, it would put it around 1940. Hope someone is needing this info. Markie ******************* PIONEER TUTTLE WOMAN ONCE PLAYED ROLE OF COWBOY Tuttle, Nov. 24: Mrs. Amanda Wampler, 79 year old Grady County pioneer, could tell the younger generation a thing or two about the cow country and about being a cowgirl. Back in the 1880's, Mrs. Wampler, then Mrs. Lenochan, joined her brother in the job of taking 1,400 head of cattle from Texas to New Mexico. She could ride as well as any cowboy. Mrs. Wampler, who now lives on her allotment five miles south of Tuttle, came here in 1889, and it was here that she reared her family, saw her grandchildren grow up and is now watching great-grandchildren take their places in the world. She was born Jan. 15, 1861, in LaMar County, Texas. She was the youngest of four daughters of Lee and Ellen Campbell. Mr Campbell had come to America from Scotland and married a native of Mississippi of Choctaw Indian origin. They established their home in Texas. He was called for service in Civil War. He left his wife, two sons, and four daughters. Amanda was five months old when her father and an uncle left. She was a little girl four and a half years old when her father and uncle returned. She was playing in the yard and was the first of the family to see them coming toward the house. They were ragged and starved. They had been discharged in Louisiana. The child was so frightened that she ran and hid and it was hours before she ventured from her hiding place and months before she made the acquaintance of her father. She was married to Tom Lenochan at the age of 17. To this union were born Joe Lenochan, who is well known in this county and now resided on his mother's allotment, and Ellen Victoria Lenochan known to many here as the late Mrs Joe Smith. Mrs. Lenochan being of a pioneer nature and knowing no physical fear joined her brother who was taking 1,400 head of cattle to New Mexico. She could ride as well as any cowboy. She made the trip; took her baby Joe with her and remained in New Mexico for a year. when her brother sold the cattle they returned to Midland, Texas. Mrs Lenochan was married in February, 1890, to George Wampler, after coming to Old Silver City in 1889. To this union were born three sons, George Jr., who now lives eight miles south of Tuttle. John, of California, and Edgar, who died in 1920 as the result of war service. Mrs. wampler has spent her life since 1889 in this vicinity.
Kelly, Thanks for e-mailing. I'm overwhelmed by the responses I've been getting on ideas. I think it's great. Anyways, I did write to the Forth Worth NARA and got both my grandparents packets. I got plenty of info on them such as land they purchased or received from the government, the registration card when they registered and after my grandmother died there was a document showing the division of property to her heirs. My father is on that list and I sent it to the State but it didn't give her maiden name so they didn't accept it. The registration card gave her maiden name but that was way back before 1896. What's interesting is her maiden name is Seyon Walker as shown when she registered in 1896 rolls and her father is listed as "Noahubbee" who was deceased. My father was not born until 1917 and she died a few months after that in the same year. Unfortunately I didn't receive a marriage certificate or birth certificate for either one of my grandparents. I did receive a proof of birth afividat for the oldest son that was born in 1901 but that doesn't help much. Anyhow, I'm thinking about writing to them and explaining the situation and hopefully I can get someone to accept what I have as far as documentation. Thanks for your help. >Hello, I am searching for a connection with Harris family line. As the rest of you, I do not have much to go on except for some family stories. I do know that my mother, Harvey Daniel Harris was born in Pine Bluff Arkansas dec 8 1918, her father was Choctaw lineage, from Oklahoma - named Clayton Harris, he married Irene Flynn. Irene's father owned a saloon in Pine Bluff Arkansas, and Clayton worked for her family. During prohibition, the saloon was closed down, father in law of Clayton Harris died, family home (on a tree named street) burned down. My mother was an unregistered family birth, and has been unable to trace any roots, she has always felt like an abandoned child. Her parents, Clayton and Irene left her to be raised by her grandmother, also named Irene Flynn - I have no further infomation, but believe Harris is a common Choctaw name, and I heard from another that there is lots of them in Oklahoma, which is where my mom believes her father was from. I also question why a female child born in 1918 would have been given such a strange name, unless she was named after a relative of same name, or an important famous person. Does anyone have an idea on this one? I will also mention that my mother was only a baby when her grandmother took her from Arkansas to San Francisco California, making the connection with family members difficult to trace. I thank any of you in advance for your thoughts, or information. Also, I must mention,Iam using my husband's e mail address, that 's why it says Michael. Actually, this note if from Stephanie, hello to yo all. f

Lori - Have you got the Dawes application packet on your grandparents? You can order it from the Forth Worth NARA. Since your grandparents were full blood it may not be included, but in my packet there is a marriage license (also Birth Certificates). They had to prove the marriage b/c she was white, but that doesn't mean that everyone wasn't supposed to provide their marriage certificates also. Let me know if you need further information. Have you checked the Miller(now Hempstead, Ark.) Co.census 1850-1860 and check Red River, Tex., census, 1850-1870's??? I believe I saw Kitchen and mabey Piltcher???? Lots of Choctaw were in that area in that time span. My family, Daniel, Muse, Tucker, Johnson, Litchford, Thomason, Ballard were there also. Hi Ethel, Thanks for emailing back. I sent 3 documents to the State of Oklahoma (Military papers, Insurance application, and a Application for Social Security. The problem is they need to see my grandmothers maiden name on a form connected to my dad. My father did not know his mother she died right after he was born. He was then taken by the state and put in an orphanage and only kept contact with his 2 brothers which both are deceased (1930's and 1945) and his sister just passed away in 1993. He had lost contact with her and I was the one to find out through Social Security records. I requested an application for her and she put unknown on the application as to the maiden name of her mother. The State said they would take an affidavit of someone that was present at my fathers birth but I don't know if anyone at that time would still be living. They would have to be around 90 years old. I wonder if they would take a copy of the dawes rolls? It's just a shame I didn't start this venture years ago. Any ideas would be appreciated on how to go about this. Thanks again. My father (born in 1917) is trying to get a delayed birth certificate from Oklahoma. He is full blooded Choctaw and his parents are on the dawes rolls. The state of Oklahoma has requested a marriage certificate of his parents but I don't think at that time they had to have one to get married or did they? Could someone tell me how I could find one if there was one available. The parent's names are Sampson Winship roll # 9218 and Seyon Walker roll# 9219 in Gaines or Garris? County . I can't read it too clearly from the roll pages due to bad copy. The year they enrolled looks like 1896. Thanks for your help. Lori

Hi all, This is my line. My grandfather Sam Willis (no middle name) was born in 1905 in I. T. He was on the Choctaw by blood newborn roll No. NB440. Sam's father Willie died when he was about 5 years old. His mother remarried twice but the second husband only lived about 2 years after the marriage. Sam was raised by his stepfather Vernon H. Elder. He attended an Indian boarding school for a time but never graduated. I don't yet know what school. He married at age 17. Because he didn't really remember his father and was raised in a all white household (he is listed as white on the 1920 Census) he had little knowledge of his family. What he know is basically what is written below. We believe there is a Martha Willis involved somehow. She apparenty tried to claim Denison's land allotment after his death. Ther is a Martha Willis on the roll whose roll number is very close to Willie & Denisons' (they have sequential numbers) Any help would be greatly appreciated. Hello to fellow Choctaw searchers: I am looking for any info about my great Grandfather, Richard Slaughter and my great grandmother, Mary Ann Higgenbothan. Both were born in Mississippi (she was Choctaw) and came to Indian Territory around 1870-1880. Their son was David Powhatan Slaughter (b. ~1880) who lived for a time in IT and then moved to north Texas with his wife Annie Slaughter. They lived in several towns but he finally settled in Howe, Texas and was the postmaster there for many years. According to family stories, D.P. Slaughter turned down the offer of land in Oklahoma when it was distributed. I am trying to trace back to any of the above but have not been able to locate them on the Dawes rolls. I saw a CD that is available that has all of the Dawes rolls on it for about $20.00 but haven't been able to find it since. Anybody know where I could find it? Thanks for any help you can provide.
