Halito Listmembers, Could someone help me help a friend. She is looking to get all "legal" with the Choctaw nation. She needs to know what all needs to be done to do this. She knows for one thing that she needs a relative on the rolls which she gave me her Great Grandmother's data who she was told was on the Dawes Rolls. Could someone also do that look up for her. The data is: Fannie Gertrude (COOK) HENDRICK born ?-?-1??? in OK died aprox. 1918 in Ft. Worth, TX, Tarrant County buried at Mt Olivet Cemetery in Ft. Worth, TX, Tarrant County She also said her gg grandmother was called Tildy because they couldn't pronounce her name and that she was a Turtle Woman and married a Choctaw man. That's all she knew of her. Can anyone help, please. Thanks, Carol

Hi Rusty Thanks for the interviews. I have not delved deeply into the Freeny's yet. Josephine Baxter who married Robert Clay Freeny is a second great grandaunt to me. Taylor The passing of two of Caddo's long time citizens of note threw a shadow across the Bicentennial year. These were James Pinckney (Cowboy) Williams, former Lieutenant Governor under Raymond Gary and State Treasurer and Homer Michael Freeney. The first passed away in March and the other in December, 1976. Freeny was born Nov. 28, 1898, son of Judge R.C. Freeny and Josephine Baxter Freeny, in Freeny Valley, Caddo, I.T. He was educated at Armstrong Academy, Bokchito, Jones Academy, Harshorne, Caddo High, Southeastern, and Oklahoma State University. He was a farmer-rancher, bookkeeper, school teacher and was county treasurer for 24 consecutive years of Bryan County. He was married to Margaret GRIGGS on 28 Nov 1918. Margaret GRIGGS was born on 28 Nov 1898 in Stuart, Choctaw Nation, Indian Territory. Article in November 1998 Bishinik: Celebrating 100th birthday of an Oklahoma pioneer Margaret Griggs Freeny, born November 28, 1898 at Stuart in Indian Territory, Choctaw Nation, will celebrate her 100th birthday in the Methodist Church in Caddo, Oklahoma from 20 to 4 p.m. on November 28. Maggie and her late husband, Homer Michael Freeny, both were born on the same date and year, and were married 20 years to the day later. Both were members of the Choctaw tribe and had great pride in their Indian history and heritage. As a mother and homemaker, she had four children: Keotah, who died in 1990; Robert Clay, who ranches east of Caney, Oklahoma; Ida Price of Irving, Texas; and Homer Michael Freeny of Bakersfield, California. She had nine grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Freeny has transcended a century of change. In those 100 years, she has seen changes from arrows to atoms; from horse-drawn carriages to computers; from traveling on horseback with her children to traveling on Boeing 747s. Maggie has celebrated all aspects of life from the joy of birth as a mother, a midwife in the early statehood, and in death as a pallbearer at a Caddo man's funeral. A very important part of her early life was a highly respected teacher in rural schools around Caddo. She inspired young people to set higher goals and as much as her legacy will live forever. For little children, possibly her most important achievement was their introduction to her delicious lemon pies with the soft, flaky crust, piled high with meringue - a pure delicacy made from scratch. Maggie Freeny is truely a remarkable woman as attested to by her many achievements in life and supported by commentary from her many students, peers, friends and beloved family members. Maggie lives in Caddo, Oklahoma. She no longer drives, but goes to the Dairy Queen on occasion for a corndog. Homer M. FREENY and Margaret GRIGGS had the following children: 8 i. Keotah FREENY died in 1990. 9 ii. Robert Clay FREENY. +10 iii. Ida FREENY. 11 iv. Homer Michael FREENY. FOURTH GENERATION 10. Ida FREENY. She was married to PRICE. My enrollment packet contained interviews with husband(Choctaw) and wife(white), two birth records of their children, proof if their marriage, two testimonies from people proving that the marriage was legal, letters sent from the BIA to the husband and wife, and a sheet stating that the husband's mother was Choctaw (his father was white). The interviews were very interesting they stated previous marriages and children born of them, the years of their births, parents, etc. It was a total of 27 pages and it cost me $13.50. Hope this helps! Curtis, if you get this before you are taken off the list, please email me at choctaw@bscn.com My maiden name is O'Neal, and would like to know what if any info you have on the O'Neal family. Thanks, Shelley O'Neal Kelley
I am looking for information on Robert Charles Lewis who served as a Scout in the Civil War. His mother was Choctaw Mary Sizemore and his father was named either Yellow Fang or War Eagle and was reportedly 3/4 Cherokee.
Try again. Markie might have been working on the site at the time. I haven't actually seen any of the packets myself, but a cousin sent me copies of what she had from the packets. Some of the info in them are letters from people proving some of the enrollees births, births of their children, marriages etc. Some have copies of the enrollment aplications. >From: AhSweet1@aol.com >Reply-To: CHOCTAW-L@rootsweb.com >To: CHOCTAW-L@rootsweb.com >Subject: Re: [CHOCTAW] Re:additional info? >Date: Wed, 9 Feb 2000 11:13:37 EST > > I sent for and received what was in my great grandmother's packet but >all >I got was a copy of the Dawes page which did show her census card number(I >think that's what it is). One would think there would be more information than that. I think, if it were me, I would call the Enrollment Office and ask what's up. You should be able to at least get copies of her census card and I would think copies of whatever documents are in her enrollment packet. Ask if there is a packet and what all it contains. Did you have to pay a fee? sherry dustyc@microgear.net -----Original Message----- From: AhSweet1@aol.com <AhSweet1@aol.com> To: CHOCTAW-L@rootsweb.com <CHOCTAW-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Wednesday, February 09, 2000 10:16 AM Subject: Re: [CHOCTAW] Re:additional info? > I sent for and received what was in my great grandmother's packet but all >I got was a copy of the Dawes page which did show her census card number(I >think that's what it is). I think you have to pay for copies of what is in the packets. I'll get back to my friend and see what she would like to do. The OK h.s. was so negative and wouldn't say if they could or could not help. I was lucky on my ancestors - met a distant cousin who gave me names and roll nbrs - then I found additional info at the h.s. a few years ago. Carol

Skylar: If you have roll numbers with names, the first thing would be to write to the Tribal Enrollent Office and ask for copies of the enrollment applications and enrollment packet. These applications contain a tremendous amount of family data. It should give names, dates, etc. on other members of the family.
