Right on Markie, and I cant help it if my GG grandmother wanted to marry a good looking Englishman, that she fell in love with, and left the reservation!! We are not american indian because we have a "roll number" we are because thats "who we are" My family never made it to the areas where they could be registered, but they tried... Nancy A OK Chickasaw American Indian, card or no card!!!!!!!!!!
Hi Markie, I can handle the wolves. There is more than here than meets the eye! I will never go out and solicit whites or others to turn face and cover for the Choctaw Nation. That is not how we honorably do things. Bit. we still want the $250 per head that the Choctaw Nation has coming from the feds to help build a stronger and more vibrant Choctaw Nation. Fact: The Choctaw Nation is sending out the census cards to each member and telling us how to fill out the cards at the end of March. Right or wrong if I do not becomes the head of the household for this event my family will not be recorded as Native Americans and Choctaws to be correct. As said in my email you deserve the title of Choctaw more than I. You have spent a lifetime in research and study but that is not how you get registered. But, for a fluke of luck I am the documented Choctaw. I do not mind the nipping at the heals of my footwear as long as I am not blindsided by the arguments. Oops, I didn't see them coming!!! I did just what happened to you when you sent out that "Oops" and hit the button to the wrong list. If Jacque's asks I will tell her what happened. I do not slam one friend in the face to get to another. I enjoy both Jacque's and your lists. I believe in wading in and becoming one of the Choctaws with the rest of them. I will be honest with all of the people that ask a question or whatever until the day that I am lied to. Anyway the list is up and alive with interest. I love it! It is pointed directly at the roots of the Choctaw. What more can you ask for. Add a little spice to the stew! Oh! Mama Mia! Hi Ellen, Well I have to put my two cents in here.. <G> First, I love you too, but I want to say that this is not my list, but it belongs to Jacque. Jacque paid for the CHOCTAW list, and I paid for the CHOCTAW-SOUTHEAST list.. :) She and I just support each other, and help each other out when we can. Sorry Jacque. Now.. from what I understand, it doesn't matter who literally takes the pen in their hand, and fills out the 2000 census. The only thing that matters, as far as Native Americans are concerned... is... who is listed as "head of household"... wheither it is the husband, wife, grandparents, uncle, or whoever LIVES in that house that is Indian, then they would be the person "written down" as "head of household"... Over all, this will increase the count of Native Americans for appropriations of funds later. I'm not sure about the Tribal census cards that are being sent out. Does that mean you will only fill out one for the tribe and not the Federal Gov. one? If you are getting one from the Choctaw nation, then my daughters are getting one from the Osage Nation.... I need to call each one of them to make sure they fill it out correctly. You are correct on me not ever being enrolled. But, like Doug said, I am Indian. This is not something that I just learned about, or found out through genealogy, in the last few months, or years. I have known this my whole life. Everyone in my family knew it. So even tho I am not enrolled, I will fill out my census as Native American. It is honorable, I am honoring my grandparents, my parents. It is not a lie. My Daddy would roll over in his grave if he heard me telling a lie. <G> It is who I am. It will never benefit me in "any" way. It will not make me a tribal member, no way, no how. It won't make a difference for me personally if I put Indian, White, or Irish. But it may benefit my people. To me, that's all that matters. I hope it will help out my Osage grandchildren, but that is all it could possibly do for me. I "am" the head of household... just ask my hubby.. LOL I can't help it if all my great and gg, and ggg grandparents liked Louisiana so much they wouldn't leave!! Well they left Ms. and came "west" of the Ms. River, they must have figured that was far enough!! haha Markie >Date: Tue, 15 Feb 2000 18:48:10 -0600 >From: "Ellen Scott" <us2scotts@earthlink.net> >To: CHOCTAW-L@rootsweb.com >Message-ID: <412000231604810120@earthlink.net> >Subject: Re: [CHOCTAW] 2000 census >Content-type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII > >Kelli, > >In no way did you offend me. Unfortunately it is a matter of honor. If I was not an Indian I would not check, mark, admit to or claim that I was. Since I am I will. I am not a fullblood but I am not "part" Indian. I don't say this to be mean or petty or hateful. It is simply who I am. My wife is white, so I will fill out the form. Please understand that part of my heritage is truthfulness, whether that is rural or Indian or stupid it is just who I am. I am not trying to offend but to share a point of view. I'll get off my soap box now. Now back to genealogy. Wrong way to fill out the census.....you cannot count your children as Native American unless the person that has the CDIB card fills out the census card. If you fill out the card instead of your spouse everyone on card will be counted as white. I hope this will help you and please have your spouse fill out the census card and mark Native American, and write OK Choctaw or MS Choctaw which ever tribe he is a member. ----- Original Message ----- From: <DStar4cup@aol.com> To: <CHOCTAW-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, February 15, 2000 6:13 PM Subject: Re: [CHOCTAW] 2000 census > Carol, > As a white person who has always been told I have indian blood in my family > line I am putting that I am White. Kelli, In no way did you offend me. I get a lot of questions and I try to answer them to the best of my ability and as clearly as possible. I do not know always where a person is coming from. I believe that most of us are kind hearted (at least that is what I want to believe). In many cases I have found that people such as Markie that can not prove that they are Indian (the government's definition)but, I with less knowledge of the Choctaws have the right to be a member of the Choctaw Nation because my Great Grandfather followed up with registering my Grandfather and his Half sister after the death of my Choctaw Great grandmother. Without both of them doing their job, we would be in Markie's position. It's a shame but it happens. But, believe me I have made some of the closest friends on this list. I owe it to the lady that put out the cold cash to start this list. She listens, she cares, and she makes the flow of this mail list one of the best. Ask any question and someone of us will find a way to get a answer. Well, I cant prove Im Native American either, but my dad knew his own mother and his grandmother, and they certainly were!!!!! I have always considered myself native american, its something you feel in your heart, regardless of all this full/half..whatever.... LETS JUST SUPPORT WHATS RIGHT FOR ALL NATIVE AMERICAN INDIANS.... I know I have heard too many family stories abt my familys land, etc, etc, etc. and how it was taken away, etc, etc, etc, LETS ALL BE COUNTED!!!!!!! Thanks Nancy
Hi list, Well, I think I stirred up a stink. =o) And I am now more confused, like I said I want to be truthful but the truth is I don't know what the truth is. I may have native blood or I may not, just haven't found the proof. But as I was reading over all the replies it came to me that the best place to ask would be Chief Pyle's office or the Choctaw newspaper BISHINIK. Maybe they will research the question and run an article on it. Anyway, I wish to send many thanks to everyone. I did get some new areas to think about on it. Blessings to all, Carol
You are very offending! Stick to your genealogy Doug!
Ellen- I'm sorry to have offended you. I am a member of the Choctaw Nation. I was just recalling what I read in the Choctaw newspaper. I guess I was not completely right. It's been a while since I read it. Thank you for correcting me and answering Carol's question. THANK YOU FOR REITERATING THAT....ENROLLMENT IS NOT REQUIRED AS PART OF THE CENSUS!!!!! I dont beleive in cheating, but I do beleive in the right of being counted!!!!
Her is a little info I found Glenda Ahhaitty, National American Indian 2000 Census Advisory Committee member in Los Angeles, said it is critical to educate Indian communities on how to fill out the census form. "Indian communities stand to be the big losers after the 2000 Census is tabulated due to possible tabulation methdology," she said. "The main data set that is used for voter redistricting or reapportionment and major allocations of funds is all individuals of a single race, Hispanic origin and two or more races. Another factor that is critical is who fills out the form as head of household. If a Cherokee woman is married to a man of another race, she must fill out the form so we dont lose the count of her and her children." If a Cherokee is married to a non-Indian, or living in a household where the head of household is non-Indian, they will be tabulated as non-Indian. Ahhaitty said Indians need to remember three important things: fill out the form themselves, check no to the Hispanic/Latino question and dont check more than one race if they want to be counted as Indian. Enrollment in the tribes is not required for the census. TerryD
Hi, about all this census back & forth...the census is mailed out to everyone, you can indicate your race. The only follow up done out here in Calif, is if you dont mail it back, hey will call or come to your home.I am 1/8 American Indian, with out a roll number, and I have every right to state that I am of american Indian decent, as much as those with roll numbers..and I will do as such. Its one of the things I can do to support our people, I am Chickasaw. Some of us cannot be registered because our ancestors missed the rolls, not my fault. Are we non registered American Indians not your brothers still?? Sometimes you have to do the right thing, and I feel I am doing the right thing..my family has been silent way too long abt who we are!!!!!
Don't you think that is getting alittle petty as to which one of us fills out the census? He is Choctaw and I am white. My kids are considered indian by the choctaw nation. where he writes the info or I do should not matter.. I am white which it will say and he is Choctaw which it will say. I think saying that it will be wrong if i fill it out is being very picky!!
Kelli, The Choctaw Nation is sending out census cards to the Members of the Choctaw Nation inside Oklahoma as well as outside the state with instructions on how to fill the cards out. If we want our families to be counted as Choctaw, we (Choctaw Member) must declare ourselves head of the household and all the family members plus our spouse will be counted as Choctaws. But, if any white or other nationality fills out the card as head of the household the Choctaw nation can not count any of members of the family as Choctaws. I do not think that the census can be padded. If you have a CDIB card that does not make you a member of any Indian Nation. You must apply for the membership only after you have acquired your CDIB Card. We are to send our census card back to the Choctaw Nation. So, I assume that you are right. I do not know what the Choctaw Nation does with their part of the census cards but I would assume that after checking our names off that they send the cards on to the Federal Census Takers as the tribes receive money for each census card that is correctly filled out. Don't fudge the truth. It's not right and nobody wants to be brought up a short and have to account for their white lie. Although we (the Choctaw Nation) appreciate the gesture! No big fight here Doug, but money form the Federal Government to each state depends on the number of that race in that state, is my understanding. Help to secure a better education for our children for one thing. Charlene
It is the right way to fill out the census report since my husband is the head of our household. He has his Cdib and tribal membership. Lisa
