    3. In reference to the Impson web site, my G Grandfather, Levi Bentin Tippy appeared in the 1850 census in Southern Illinois with Raney Tippy, born in 'Georgia' as the mother and no father listed. The census also shows two sisters, Mary A. and Letha. Mary , b. 3-5-1827, married Simeon Smith, b. 4-2-1816, Cherokee County, Georgia. Letha, b. abt. 1831 ? My G Grand father, Mary "Putman" Smith, Simeon and Levi's daughter Margaret are berried in Walnut Grove Cemetery in Mcminn County Tennessee. My question, "Is it possible that my grandfather and his family, walked the Trail of Tears as a child and stayed in Southern Illinois?" I know this is probably silly, however the migration route came within a mile of my home, Down what is now R. 148 in Southern Illinois. There is also a reference to Mary "Putman" Smith. Would this be an original maiden name? As you can see, I have many question and very few answers. Any help would be greatly appreciated. http://community.webtv.net/JSTIPPY/TheTippyPage

    3. Hello List Members: Jacque Thanks for the informational pages and websites I will check them out. I notice there is no information listed on the Atoka County Link on the list of county's. Does anybody on the list have any information on Choctaws in that area? That is where my ancestry line of the surname Gable family were born and raised, around Lehigh Oklahoma which I believe to be in Atoka county. My dad was born there in Lehigh OK in 1910, Does anyone know if there would be a record of his birth if he was born at home by a mid-wife at the Atoka county Registrar. I do still have his death certificate which list his birth place as Lehigh Oklahoma his name was Tony Gable, he did not have a roll number, but I was told by him that he had some brothers and sisters in Atoka county who had roll numbers I assume because he said they had received the 40 acre and a mule before Oklahoma became a State. And he said they had stop giving the Choctaw Freedmen the 40 acres and a mule when he was born in 1910 because that was the year Oklahoma became a state. On his death certificate his mom's name is listed as Ginny C. Gable Ginny could be short for Virginia. And it also could possibly have been spelled Genny instead of Ginny not really sure. His dad's name was Martin Gable as listed on his death certificate, From what I remember him telling me he had brothers and sisters who received the 40 acres and a mule by the names of Ida Gable, Ollie Gable, Johnny or John Gable, Alman or Albert Gable we had a uncle who use to come see us that we called Uncle Alman, but I now believe his first name to have been Albert. There was one more dad mentioned but I can't remember the name, I'll have to find my little notebook I remember writing the names down but will have to find my little notebook. If anybone has any suggestions on how I may use my dad's death certificate to do some research of the records on file in Atoka County are Lehigh OK or the Beaureau of vital statistics please let me know. Peace! Slimey, Otis Gable

    3. Hello Choctaws, I hope there are those among you who can assist me in my search. My great great grandfather was Joshua Bohanon ( born 1819 in Mississippi) one of the sons of William Bohanon, Sr., and a full-blood Choctaw woman. Joshua married four times in the course of his long life; his fourth and final wife was Louisa Christy, the daughter of George Christy and Emily Bohanon. Joshua and Louisa were the parents of four children: Frances, Jacob, Silas, and Elizabeth. Frances married Washington Hudson, and their oldest son was Peter Wayland Hudson, my wonderful grandfather. After all that comes the question. Can anyone supply any information concerning the George Christy family? All we know of him is just his name and the fact of his marriage to Emily Bohanon. I live in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, now, and Christy is also a Cherokee name. I don't know that I have met a Choctaw Christy--something that I hope to remedy. Of course, I will be more than happy to contribute information which I have concerning the above three families. Sharon Olive DeLoache deloache@intellex.com Tahlequah, Oklahoma

Non federal Indians are not getting the full story on how to enumerate and be counted as Indian. These are the rules given to Federal Tribes by the Census Bureau. To make sure you are counted, follow the steps below. Check Indian as the only race listing no other admixture (white, black, etc.). Enter the name of your tribe using only 19 letters. Check with tribal officials to ensure everyone in the tribe is using the same tribal name with same spelling. Be sure that person #1 on the Census lists as Indian, because everyone in the household will be counted as the same race as # 1. Pass it on and your people will be counted appropriately. There are two forms, short and long. The long form has the added question about ancestry which asks nationality, i.e. what your parents-grandparents were. Again, what is filled in is important. The coding information is true for all minorities, since how the Census statisticians deal with the data is the key. Only full bloods of any race are listed in the primary census reports that are promulgated for national use. The secondary census report data seldom get wide spread discrimination; thus, anyone not counted as full blood does not get counted into program funding which is based upon the primary race count. I know it sounds complex and it is, since it is essentially a governmental, money saving device. Copies of the census forms are available on from the Census Bureau.
