Did you get the copyies in the mail on Ward?
Hi Donna, glad you could peek in, if just to say hi. I wanted to let you know real quick that i read the book you recommended, "Nations Remembered" by Theda Perdue and it is wonderful. In case you didn't know, it is based on the Pioneer Papers I have posted on my surname board and that are located at the state historical society. The book is a refreshing change from the government-info-based books about the removal and territory. Other books I recommend: "The Dawes Commission and the Allotment of the Five Civilized Tribes," 1893-1914 by Kent Carter ---a scholarly book. "After the Trail of Tears: The Cherokees Struggle," by William McLoughlin, University of North Carolina Press -- I am just now reading. "The Five Civilized Tribes," by Grant Foreman, OU press --- he is a leading authority who was in charge of the WPA project that resulted in Pioneer Papers. OU Press "Indian Removal," by Grant Foreman, OU Press -- just bought, havent read yet, but see above. "History of the Choctaw, Chickasaw and Natchez Indians,' by H.B. Cushman, edited by Angie Debo --- an indepth historical prospective. OU Press "Indians of North American, The Choctaw,"by Jesse O. McKee -- part of a series that is a basic primer Anything by Angie Debo. The ones I have read are "And Still the Waters Run, The Betrayal of the Five Civilized Tribes," and "The Rise and Fall of the Choctaw Republic." These are about allotments and how Choctaws handled them. I also hear "Geronimo" is good. She is an Oklahoma treasure. OU Press. "Choctaws and Missionaries in Mississippi, 1818-1918," Clara Sue Kidwell. -- self-explanatory; a good view of the Folsoms and their role in Choctaw History. OU Press. "Way Down Yonder in the Indian Nation," by Michael Wallis (of Tulsa), St. Marten's Griffin -- just plain ole fun. Except for the McKee book, these are all widely available in paperback. Jacque and everyone: Just my opinion...for what it's worth. There are several of us on the Choctaw and Choctaw-SE list who have resources such as lists, rolls, etc.in their private library that might be able to really help someone out there looking for any clue to their ancestors NA heritage. I for one am happy to do lookups on the resources I have (listed below) and have made this offer on several surname mail lists that I am on. The Tribal Enrollment offices are swamped these days with everyone trying to find that lost "indian in the cupboard" in their family. As we have seen, many of these people have nothing more than a family story or rumor. When I started trying to document 30 years ago, I didn't have the faintest clue where to go or what to do. I now have a little more knowledge and experience in researching NA records. Don't you guys think the tribal offices would be happy for us to serve as sort of unofficial "front-line" researchers. Maybe they wouldn't - I'm just asking. If we can be of service by looking up exact census card nos., etc. it stands to reason that the whole process could go a little smoother. Seems to me we are in a position to take a lot of the work off the tribal office. I know they must have a tremendous backlog, as I have friends who have sent in applications and queries and it has taken them 2 years to get replies. Has anyone asked the Tribal Office what they think about us doing lookups? I see nothing wrong with putting up a page on our site listing the names of members who are willing to do lookups and what resources they have available. Justmy opinion.... Whacha' think, gang??? Here's what I've got: Indes to Final Dawes Rolls, Five Civilized Tribes (Choctaw, Cherokee, Creek, Seminole, Chickasaw. Index to applications for Final Dawes Rolls, 1898-1914. Applications for Final Dawes Rolls rejected. The following rolls are for EASTERN CHEROKEE only: 1817 Reservation Roll, 1817-1835 Emigration Roll, 1835 Henderson Roll, 1848 Mullay Roll, 1851 Siler Roll, 1852 Chapman Roll, 1869 Swetland Roll, 1883 Hester Roll, 1908 Churchill Roll, 1909 Guion/Miller East Roll, 1924 Baker Roll. These are for WESTERN CHEROKEE (Oklahoma): 1851 Old Settler Roll, 1852 Drennen Roll, 1898-1914 Dawes Roll, 1909 Guion/Miller West Roll. If anyone wants to know why each one of these rolls was done and more info about it, contact me privately. Iam happy to offer these resources to anyone who need a lookup provided you follow my request guidelines. sherry dustyc@microgear.net -----Original Message----- From: Jacque Hopkins Wolski <hopkinsj@ida.net> To: CHOCTAW-L@rootsweb.com <CHOCTAW-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Sunday, March 05, 2000 7:36 PM Subject: [CHOCTAW] Forwarded messages to the list >Well I'm not really sure. Hi Jacque, Everyone has voted yes on the Choctaw Southeast list so far... so I'm with you on forwarding them all to the list. Hopefully we can help all of them out, or they could help us out. :) They could decide to join us here on our list if they want to. There have been several who I don't know how to help, but hopefully our list members can. So I vote yes too! <G> Markie At 06:30 PM 03/05/2000 -0800, you wrote: >Well I'm not really sure. Laurie, do you have any Collins married to your Buckner's? I have a Henry Buckner b:1816 IN. m: Parthena Black b: 1820 IN. They came to Ar. Mary and Lucinda (2 of their children) were married to brothers James M. Collins and William Smith Collins. I have more info if these names are familiar. Lee Ann Collins
I am looking for the ancestors of my great great grandmother, Isabelle (sp?) Leflore Burns. I know that she was married to Henry Frieland Buckner "Buckner" Burns on August 23 or 26, 1869 at what is now Leflore, OK (it's speculated that she was 21 or 22 years old at the time they were married) and that she died on February 6, 1879. She had at least 3 children with Buckner: Henry Franklin, my great grandfather - born June 1872 and died June 1946; Mattie A. - born 1877 and died 1936; and William J. - born January 29, 1879 and died July 23, 1953. Also at the time of the marriage, Isabelle had an illegitimate daughter, Janie, that was about 5 years old at that time and who died in 1894 or 1895. Isabelle's half-brother was Joseph "Joe" Leflore; they shared the same father, Wallace (sp?) Leflore. It's possible that Isabelle's mother's name was Judie or Julie and that she had a sister (half-sister?) named Lizzie that was married to Buckner's brother Burton. Buckner is listed on ! the Dawes Rolls, Choctaw Nation as an intermarried white, #1542; Henry Franklin Burns is listed as 1/2 Choctaw on the Dawes Rolls, Choctaw Nation, #8872. Any information that can be shared will be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Laurie Gibson P.O. Box 111 Haskell, OK 74436-0111

I am on this list because I was advised that the Chickasaw nation was also included here. If there is a better/more appropriate list, please advise. We have a family tradition of an Indian ancestor. My mother was often told by her father that his grandmother was full blood Indian and his grandmother German making him 1/4 of each. Living in TN, the early assumption was Cherokee. I am wondering if perhaps she was Chickasaw. Please critique my thinking and provide any help. Agness (Floyd- a daughter's death certificate gives this maiden name) Greener was born in 1821 in GA, TN, AL depending on the source being consulted. Her oldest known child was born in 1852 in TN. I have found no marriage for her, cannot locate her and children until 1870 census. At that time, she is a widow living in Henderson Co, TN. Because of the possible birth in GA and AL and also because Henderson Co borders north of Hardin Co which had a known Chickasaw presence, I have begun to think that perhaps she was Chickasaw. In addition, we have discovered that a grandson was living in the "Southern District of the Indian Territory Chickasaw Nation" in 1902. I am, however, having a problem researching for Chickasaw information both specific "genealogical" type info and also general info to increase my knowledge about this particular Indian tribe. Any good books, tips, etc greatly appreciated. My great-grandmother's name was Lavine Brown Motes with a roll # 9506. I saw the name Brown on this list and know that she was in Oklahoma because my grandmother was born here on 1/19/1909 . Was that name as common then as it is now? Could this possibly have been her family? I am brand new to this search, so anything you say could help. Thanks Pam Gallear Edmond
