    2. Beverly Brown
    3. The only thing that makes me think twice about that is that in an interview my grandfather did with a WPA worker, he talked about how Choctaws very seldom took a literal translation of their Choctaw names; other tribes often did, but not usually Choctaws. Of course, that doesn't mean they never did, so it's quite possible those started out as vbi, or some variation of vbi. So maybe Sixkiller started out as Untuklotubbe or something like that. An easy task, really, you see I have taken the "mentions" and just put them into a "list", as I go along. Now I know that I have some names that are repetitive, so I need to take the list, put the names in alphabetical order, and eliminate the repetitive names by placing the page numbers next to one entry for that name. If you want to do this for me, I could send you the txt file, you could alphabetize it and then I could send you a "daily" list, as I continue my reading of the book. Would save me some time, and be a big help to me. Nalora

    1. Re: [CHOCTAW] Smallwood
    2. Thanks, I am not really connected to Smallwood. My husband's grandmother, Lucy Jane Tanner, m. Michol Smallwood. They had a daughter, Sorilla (don't know what happened to her). He died perhaps in 1877. In 1880, she married James Knox Bowman in Dallas Co. I have been unable to find anything about either of them. She died in Carter Co., OK in 1895. The 1890 Census of Chickasaw Nation, Book 2 has: 27080-Bowman, J.K. and wife, age 33, 1 male, 3 females, Healdton, Carter County, Choctaw by marriage to Indian, 6 in family. The children were never registered to the Dawes rolls that we can find. I hoped if I could find her with Smallwood's, maybe I could trace her back farther. I know nothing beyond "start with what you know." If you can be of any help I would really appreciate it. Jean

    1. [CHOCTAW] O'Beirne Book
    2. Nalora
    3. I will be posting the entire "comprehensive" Index to "Leaders and Leading Men of the Indian Territory", Vol. I, Choctaws and Chickasaws By H. F. O'Beirne published 1891. When I get it finished. I am hoping to finish it in a week, it looks like now, at the rate it is going. I posted the original index to the book to this list a long while back, and it can be found, I think, on a search of the Archives of this list. What I am doing is taking all the genealogical information from each entry and placing that underneath the main entry header's name. I am also compiling a "brief mention" list of other people who are in the book, in individual stories, and yet are not on the original index. Essentially completing a more comprehensive index to the book. Eventually this, and all my other transcription work will be on my own webpage, which should be ready for the public in another week or so, as well. Jacque has had a lot of my stuff sitting on her web page for a long while, since I am so slow at getting my own web page up and running. I am very thankful to Jacque for providing me space for so long for some of my transcriptions. (and I am thrilled those tiny little Chronicle index notations helped you so much Sharon!! just thrilled--Maybe when I get the time to really scour I will come up with more. I do know your surnames are in the O'Beirne Book) Nalora

    3. I just found this information today courtesy of Nalora's generous help. In the Chronicles of Oklahoma Vol. XVII, No. 2. June 1939. "A Story of Choctaw Chiefs" by Peter James Hudson. On page 206 "Ben Smallwood succeeded Thompson McKinney, taking the oath of office in October 1888 and serving until 1890. His opponent was Wilson N. Jones. It is not known what school he attended. He was a son of William Smallwood. His grandfather was Elijah Smallwood, a white man, from South Carolina, who went to Mississippi and married Mary Leflore, sister of Thomas Leflore. Ben Smallwood's father, William Smallwood was a student at Choctaw Academy. He was a member of Council in 1863. He married Annie Burney, a Chickasaw woman. He lived and died Dec. 15,1891 at Lehigh and is buried there. Mrs. Lizzie Nash of Antlers is a descendent of Ben Smallwood." Maybe this will give you something more to go on. 3. Oops, found another one, as I work on this index tonight: ROBINSON, McKee F., Choctaw, b. 1856 Father: Rev. Calvin Robinson of Blue county wife: Lorena Daney daughter of Watson Daney. children: Coleman D., Carrie L., Nannie and Ella page 139 of O'Beirne's Book. MCKEE F. ROBINSON (Choctaw) The subject of this sketch is a son of Rev. Calvin Robinson, of Blue county; was born in 1856 and married Lorena Daney, the daughter of Watson Daney. He was educated at Old Spencer, in Cedar county, which school he attended for four years. After marrying he opened a farm and took charge of stock, moving one year ago to his present residence and renting out the old place. In 1887 he was attacked by a spinal disorder, which was mistaken by his physician for consumption, and for which he found no relief until he met a traveling physician named Dr. Harteman, who has since treated him with great success. Mr. Robinson has four children--Coleman D., Carrie L., Nannie and Ella, the oldest being seven and the youngest one. He believes in progressive action and is a Presbyterian in his belief. Nalora
