"Leaders and Leading Men of the Indian Territory", Vol. I, Choctaws and Chickasaws By H. F. O'Beirne published 1891. page 34 ALFRED A. DUNN, M. D. One of the most promising young professional men in the Indian Territory is Alfred A. Dunn, son of the late William N. Dunn, M. D., Atoka. He was born in 1861 in Choctaw County, Alabama, and was educated at Meridan, Mississippi, graduating in medicine at the University of Louisville, Ky., in March 1887. The subject of this sketch is descendant of the Hyapah-tuk-kallo clan, his mother's name being Yates, while his grandmother was Millie Nail, belonging to one of the most renowned families among the Choctaws. Having graduated, Doctor Dunn spent a short time in Atoka, after which he moved to Thackerville; and finally, in 1888, made his home in the beautiful and rapidly growing town of Purcell, where in partnership with Dr. Steade he is conducting an extensive practice and a well stocked drug store. Dr. Dunn also has several farms, containing one thousand five hundred acres in cultivation which is worked by fifteen renters. His mother, younger brother, and one sister are still residing in Atoka, I. T. ------------ Nalora

I tried to get in touch with Don several years ago and he had no phone. I ended up calling his mother and I had to write him. Thank you very much. It is very hard to figure out what she says. one day it is one thing and the next another. The only things she agrees on are the names. In one place in my notes I have that Albert her grandfather was born in 1810 then in another she said that he died in 1936. She also says that her mother Josephine is suppose to be buried in Petal, Pearl river co, cemetery. and also died in 1936. LOL So I know that she has her dates all messed up. will go to the web page you suggested thank you Sheila ----- Original Message ----- From: "Gene Philips" <dataman@telepath.com> To: <CHOCTAW-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, March 29, 2000 5:05 PM Subject: Re: [CHOCTAW] Re: [cherokeendn] Re: Fwd: TENNESSEE-D Digest V00 #108 > At 04:01 PM 03/29/2000 -0800, Sheila Lawyer wrote: > >My stepmother was born in Petal, pearl co, Miss. and her birth records > >also where burned. Hahahah Geneforbes........... Amen brother Nancy
Hello to the list! I also subscribed to this list because of the tremendous knowledge and insight that I have seen here. The Native American portion of my family is through my husbands side. I did not grow up with Oklahoma history or any knowledge of Indian Territory. I have encouraged my children make their own decision about what race to mark on the census and their school forms and they have chosen Native American. I support that decision but also feel that they have a responsibility to understand what that means. We do not live in Oklahoma and they will not learn Native American history in our schools. Your contributors provide a very valuable understanding to the life and times of many Native American families that could not be obtained anywhere else. I have learned facts and terms and resources and how to be "politically correct"! :) You guys should be very proud of the education and understanding you provide. Kudos to all! Barbara Plano, Texas My husband, children and even my elderly mother-in-law are marking Native American on their census this year for the first time! (Someday some genealogist will be confused by that!).

Slimey: Right on! Sandi :)
Dear Slimey... Am I African American? I am English, Scottish, Chickasaw Indian, thats my dads side... my moms people WE BELEIVE came from a group of People referred to as Melugeon, which can be a mixture of native american, portuguese and African American sometimes!!I have no idea!!!! Whatever I am, I accept it. I have alot of very close friends that are African American, but not wholly, since a couple of them have g-grandfathers who they know were white of some kind. We laugh since they think they maybe part white and I may be part black! I identify more with my N/A side. My girfriends say "She doesnt know she isnt black" I do have a girfriend who is NA and African American. The thing is the African Americans went to live with the NA's, and some were on the trail of tears. We have alot in common with them, in alot of ways... God Bless Nancy "not sure who I am somedays"
Lisa: AMEN! And, since your married name is COLBERT, we might be related. Sandi :)
