    3. The Rootsweb mailing lists will cease to function in about a week's time. If this is news to you, please read the older emails I've copied below. I've not had feedback from this list that anyone wants it to continue. You've had time to think about it now - would you like to see it continue elsewhere? Reply and let me know if you do, and I will set up a new group at groups.io - I've already done this for the groups that have responded positively. Wendy Howard List Owner/Admin ---------- Forwarded message --------- From: Wendy Howard <wendy.howard@gmail.com> Date: Sun, Jan 12, 2020 at 2:04 PM Subject: The future/fate of RootsWeb Mailing Lists You are receiving this email because you are subscribed to a Rootsweb mailing list that I administer. As you can see below, the mailing lists at Rootsweb are going to cease functioning soon. If you would like to continue being a member of some sort of group on the topic of this list, please post back to the list where you're seeing this and say so. This list is extremely quiet and rarely sees any activity. Is there any point in continuing? Have you found a better place to exchange information that you can recommend to the other members of this list? - post and tell us about it if you have. If you feel there is still a need for something, no other suggestions are put forward, and you are prepared to participate as a member, I'm willing to make an effort to create a new forum in a suitable place. I'm not going to do all the work and have not activity from its members, so do think about it before replying. Suitable places include Google Groups (which act like mailing lists and message boards combined, and you don't have to have a Google account to be there, but it helps), and Facebook. If you have another suggestion, please let me know. Please take care to ensure any replies are sent to the mailing list, not to me personally, unless there is an administrative issue you wish to raise with me. It would be nice if the list went out with a flurry of activity as we all share our latest discoveries before it is turned off. I think I have found a clue - the Chitty family was tied to the Sandifer family who was also tied to the Rice family. A trove of Sandifer documents posted online revealed that a John Chitty had many close ties to a John Sandifer and by extension to the Rice clan. Author: treegrowers Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.chitty/179/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I am looking for information on William Francis Chitty who was born about May 4 1853 in New Shoreham Rhode Island to William Chitty and Elizabeth Wilkey. Elizabeth Wilkey was previously married to William Simmons of Tiverton. William F. had 2 half brothers Edward and Jeptha Simmons, 2 half sisters Josephine and Elizabeth Simmons and 2 full sisters Phebe and Jane Chitty.. I know that the family spent some time in New Shoreham on block Island and also Tiverton and Portsmouth. I believe William F. spent some time at the Providence Reform School in 1869. At some point for unknown reasons I believe he changed his name to William F. Simmons. I have him in Jersey City, NJ by 1878 as William Simmons. I am looking for proof of the name change or any information on the Chitty family. My reasons for thinking that there was a name change comes form William Simmons obituary and death cert. that states him to have been born in New Shoreham May 4, 1853. Also his middle name is Francis and he named his son Jeptha. All of our family records indicate we come from RI. I've checked with many historical societies and town records and find nothing, Probate records show no name change. Any help is appreciated. Thank you! Bobby Don Chitty and I are second cousins and have been in communication via the internet and phone calls for a few years in discussion of our heritage. I am always grateful to others who have preceded me in the research of my heritage. I completed my first of four heritage books last fall I am writing for our grandchildren. My Chitty / Hataway heritage is the second of the four on which I began researching over ten years ago. I am quite familiar with all of the early Chitty(s) in America and know that my heritage does not descend from Benjamin as does the North Carolina group. I will read all of the posting and then work them into my conclusions. Again, thank you for your research and willingness to help others as well. Author: rickberrey Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.chitty/150.2.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: If you surf the web for old post you will find a discussion of Valentine Chitty. It concluded that Valentine had no sons and his daughter married 1st an Ingram 2nd a Gilliam. You will find the Chitty family and Gilliam family in the same area and on the same records. William Chitty and Mary Chitty children of John Chitty of Barnwell Dist both married Gilliams. Celah Chitty daughter of Edward the younger married John Ray, there is an older post that speaks of John Chette and his sister Celah walking behind the wagon all the way to Sc. Again if you search the older post of the gen forums of the side families you will find that a lot of your work has already been done for you. There is a good web site by a John Chitty out of Texas which is a good place to start. My records were lost in a flood years ago, I don't copy anything anymore and most of my Chitty line is documented on the John Chitty site. If Edward the elder was the father of Edward jr then he would have been under th! e laws of the time been the heir of Edward the elder. Jr, Sen, elder, younger , didn't always indicated kinship at that time in history. If you look at the Surry parish records you will find at the first of the I think 2nd vol 1585? of births. It states that Henry Chitty had somewhere in the mid to upper 200 range ( I cant remember the exact number) of grand kids before his death of I think 57 years. There may have been some kind of relation between Edward the elder and our Chittys , but not enough to leave them anything in his will, he has no sons and dead ends . Charles K out of SC also dose not seem to connect to our Chittys. There was an Adam Chitty in north Alabama around 1790 and later a John Chitty in Jackson Co Al ( I think )that I could never place and might belong to our line or the Benj. Chitty, Moravian line. I have never seen the Ballenger name connected before to Frances wife of John Chette ,do we know where that info came from. First appearace would seem to be as witness to the 1727 will of John Surginor. It is a bit difficult to tell where Edward the Elder's Isle of Wight records end and Edward junior's records begin. This Edward died about 1758 leaving behind 5 minor children: John (who went to SC), Britton, Celia, Elizabeth, and Edward. I believe that Edward is the ancestor to my Chitty lineage... Also our Chitty lines used the same names over and over, and Ben was not one of them. There was also a Valentine Chitty in England around 1680, may be a connection.
