WU Tieh-chen or WU Tze-chuan of Kwangtung > China Dear Christina, Well-over 70% of Hawaii's local Chinese community comes from Chungshan. Hawaii's local Chinese community is a good source to tap into for genealogy information. In many of my earlier postings, I have made appeals to list members to get in touch with me as I am trying to organize a small group of people in Hawaii to volunteer to do genealogy research and to help other people, especially from Hawaii or kin, know their roots and find their genealogy trees. From my own experience in Hawaii, I've found that many local Chinese have given up searching for their roots and have taken the position that records do not exist. The local "scholars" have been of no help to them. Contrary to this experience of theirs, I have helped a number of people, both in Hawaii and in mainland U.S. locate kin and genealogy trees. In cases, where I could be of no help, I have given people a sense of, at least, their family background (family or clan's history). I found that this takes a lot of my time and I do not have the time to devote to every soul asking for genealogy for free. A professional genealogist charges between $80 to $160 per hour with no results guaranteed (refer to http://www.idis.com/ChouOnline). I therefore suggested that if people would like to find their genealogy, one alternative would be to volunteer to help others. In the process, they will gain insight and knowledge and be able to locate at least some, if not all, the information they are seeking. If members of this list live in Hawaii, I would encourage them to get in touch with me. I would like to put a genealogy research group together, of volunteers, people who enjoy the study of genealogy. I have a lot of knowledge and research techniques to share with others free of charge. If people on this list live outside of Hawaii, they should write me their needs (don't expect me to come up with all of the answers immediately, though) and I will see what I can do for you. I have already found kin and genealogy roots for some people asking. As to your concern, about WU Tieh-chen or WU Tze-chuan. If he was Mayor of Shanghai or Secretary-General of the Kuoming Tong, there would be information that you can find out about him. I can, perhaps, help. If you are family, there would be the chance that more information could be found and you could be put in touch with family members. Information, sometimes, depending on what you are asking for, can not be given out to any "Tom, Dick, or Harry." Here in Hawaii, we do have our connections to both mainland China as well as to Taiwan. Additionally, my grandfather lived near Shanghai and may still have family connections there, which I could ask to help you. Things take time and people in mainland China do not respond immediately as most Americans (including Chinese-Americans) seem to DEMAND. So, what I am saying to the group and to you is that genealogy, history, and information assistance is available. What I need for, my part, is volunteers, in Hawaii, to do the leg work. If others are interested in much the same things, but they live outside of Hawaii. I would be happy if they could join our group, when it forms. If for example, someone lives in Oakland, California and a request comes into our group requesting information about another Chinese family in Oakland, we will have a resource person to write to. Does it take any special training to do genealogy research. For most part, simple genealogy research work can be done by lay persons. I would be happy to train others. Anyone in Hawaii up to this challenge? Please write or call. General information on the Chou clan (genealogy) can be found at my website http://www.geocities.com/Tokyo/Courtyard/1535/cha_pu.html The following surnames descend from Chou Dynasty Emperors and major Princes: Chow, Chang, Ching, Ing, Wu, Goo, Lum, Lau, Loui, Sun, Ho, Wong, Yap, Lai, Kee, Kwock, Mao, Choy, Dang, Young, Siu and a few others. I have access to some of the unpublished genenalogy records of these Imperial families, as I am a descendant and family member. My resume is online. -- Lester D. K. How exciting - I was thrilled to hear from you. I think we are related too. It could be a bit distant, as my Grandmother had three husbands, one of which was Samuel. These are the details I have so far: Sam was born in 1861 in Mudgee (BC 10014 - Father ? and mother Harriette. In 1893 Sam married Emma A Antonowitch (Emma A Spearman on Marriage Cert No. 4948). in Mudgee. He was Emma's third husband. In 1893 Annie Ivy Teong was born in Mudgee (23978). In 1896 Richard P Teong was born in Mudgee (23554). IN 1910 Samuel H V Teong died (DC F Samuel W MCS M Lilian R) In 1931 a Samuel Teong died in Mudgee (aged 73 years) BDM. In 1947 another Samuel Teong died 6.9.1947 aged 85 -buried in Portland Cemetary. I am more interested in John Daniel Chy who was Emma Annie Antonowitch's second wife. On their marriage certificate Annie I Teong was a witness, so they must have been friends. John Daniel Chy was born in 1826 in China he arrived in Australia approx 1846. He was a jeweller and lived in Mudgee. In 1884 Ethel May Chy was born. She was my mother Theresa Moore (Parker) mother. Her first husband was Benjamin Spearman. I have lots more info. I have not posted it on the web yet as it is still a work in progress. But if you would like to contact me directly or, or if you have an e-mail address I could send you a copy of my Tree so far. There is also a lady living in Portland. I have spoken to her by phone, but she does not have any info. Regards, hope to hear from you soon. Barbara Moore barbaramoore@bigpond.com
