Posted on: General China Query Forum Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/China/General/10379 Surname: Tonnochy ------------------------- I am trying to trace our families history in Asia. Tonnochy ancestors migrated from Scotland to India around 1780 to Hong Kong in 1862 and then to the U.S. and Australia and who knows where else. If anyone has any information on this family I'd be thrilled to hear of it. Thanks

    3. Dear subscribers: Due to a recalcitrant spammer, I have had no choice but to permanently disable the gateway between the China GenConnect board and the CHINA-L list. The guy has now learned that he can post his advertisement on the GenConnect board by changing his e-mail address. Rather than have his spams continue to enter into the archive on CHINA-L, I have shut down the gateway. We can fight him more effectively on the GenConnect end, but it looks like it will be a long and neverending battle. I don't know if there is anything Chinese authorities can or will do to encourage him to adopt more ethical business practices, but this is the contact information from his Web site: Construct Machinery Plant Retired Office Qian Tang Jiang Road No17 Urumqi Xinjiang China Postcode: 830006 He Zhongkui c\o Heliang Tele 0086-0991-5892031 Maybe someone in China can get the authorities to encourage an attitude adjustment so that we can again concentrate on genealogy. The temple walls were inscribed with the genealogy of the village residents. Although this was apparently a common practice of Buddhist temples, I'm sorry to say that many temples in the larger villages and towns were destroyed during the Cultural Revolution. Still - it is possible that one might find a reference on the wall of a temple. It is also possible that birth records might still be found at the county seat. These are probably long shots. 3. Hello listers Can anyone offer me guidance on researching an Englishman who died in China - no idea where. He was Edmund Lewis ROBINSON b1878 London, England; d1909 China. My information is that he went to China to assist with the development of the railways - probably as a land surveyor. Even pointers as to railway history in China at this time would be useful - maybe I could find the companies involved and then attempt to search their records. Also, does anyone know what happened to foreigners dying in China at this time? Were they buried in special foreigner cemeteries? If they were hundreds of miles from the main centres for foreigners (e.g. Shanghai) were they buried alongside the Chinese community? I am aware that Chinese culture is different to 'European' culture and I wonder how this would have affected the work on the railways especially in Imperial China. Thank you in advance for any thoughts, guidance. Regards Chris Rodgers Bristol, UK

    3. Dear subscribers, I have had to disable the gateway from the China GenConnect board. I am at war with a tour guide in Xinjiang who believes he has the right to advertise his services on the China query system. I have told him that such posts are inappropriate for the board and list. Still, he keeps reposting his ad. I delete it, and he resubmits it. Thus I have had to disable the gateway to keep the China-L list from being bombarded with his posts. I WILL keep deleting the idiot's messages from the GenConnect board, and hope to find a way to bar him from posting there.
