Elias Joseph Wofford and wife, Delilah Emily Wofford settled in Chickasaw County in the early 1840's along with numerous other Woffords who were early settlers. Elias Joseph Wofford lived in the Houston area.....I am trying to locate descendents who still live in the area, one of his daughters married a Weaver and the other a Windham. Ellison Waddell (Waddle) and Elizabeth Johnson were also in the county in the early 1840's......does anyone have a connection to these folks or any info....am at a dead end here. Elizabeth Johnson was daughter of James Johnson and Amanda "Didama " Wofford, also in the area in early 1840's....anyone ever head of these people?? The Waddell's (Waddle) moved on to Texas....cannot determine when James Johnson died there or when Didama died, if there in the 1851 time frame or she moved on to Texas also... Any help will be greatly appreciated. Barbara halla1001@gvtc.com
We have added mailing lists for the Indian Rolls presently online and those still waiting to be put online. http://www.accessgenealogy.com/native/rolls.htm The mailing lists are not meant as a way to search the rolls but to provide information on their historical value as a tool for those searching for their Native American Heritage. For some of the rolls there is a large amount of information on the reason behind the roll, when taken, where and WHAT FOR. Sharing this information with others will benifit all of us who search. Please share this email with others Thanks Judy -- Native American Genealogy http://www.accessgenealogy.com/native/ AccessGenealogy http://www.accessgenealogy.com/
AccessGenealogy has been working hard to bring our readers new information. I have included some additional titles that are not Native American in nature, but Trails, Forts amd War do provide locations that might be of assistance to readers. Drennen Roll Index http://www.accessgenealogy.com/native/drennensearch.php This is the first census of the new arrivals of 1839 and the first enumeration of Indians after the Trail of Tears. The roll was prepared by John Drennen and contains the payee's name, Cherokee district and family group. Native American Treaty Signers http://www.accessgenealogy.com/native/searchsigners.php This unique database comprises a list of all signers of each specific treaty, whether the signer be white or Native American. To search for a white ancestor, place their name in the Surname and given (first) name below. To search for a Native American ancestor try the Indian and Other searches, each one separately. Hester Roll Index, 1884 http://www.accessgenealogy.com/native/hester/ This roll lists 2,956 persons residing in North Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina, Virginia, Illinois, Kansas, Colorado, Kentucky, New Jersey, and California. Those living west of the Mississippi and listed by Mr. Hester were descendants of members of the Eastern Band and had no affiliation with the Cherokee Nation in the west. Pamunkey Indians of Virginia http://www.accessgenealogy.com/native/virginia/pamunkey/index.htm One of the most prominent among the confederacies of Indian tribes belonging to the Algonquian stock, in the history of the settlement of our country, was the Powhatan confederacy of tidewater Virginia and Maryland. The prominence of this confederacy in our early history is partly due to the fact that Capt. John Smith was writer as well as explorer, and left permanent records of the primitive people whose domain he invaded; but these and other records indicate that Powhatan was a chief of exceptional valor and judgment. The Narragansett Indians, 1768 http://www.accessgenealogy.com/rhodeisland/historical/narragansett_indians_1768.htm After a brief mission among the Delaware Indians, he was successively pastor at North Hampton, N. H., and at East Windsor, Conn. The book is privately printed, and therefore inaccessible to most readers. It has accordingly been thought proper to print here an ex-tract relating to the condition of the Narragansett Indians in 1768, which it is believed will be regarded as of considerable interest. Choctaw Mixed Bloods and the Advent of Removal http://www.accessgenealogy.com/native/choctaw_mixed_bloods.htm Much of what transpired between the Choctaw nation and the United States government from 1795 until Choctaw Removal in 1830 was heavily affected by this group of white countryman and their Choctaw speaking children. The Chickasaw, Cherokee, and Creek experience was similar. There is also plentiful anecdotal evidence from the nineteenth century historians that countrymen and mixed bloods were commonplace in Indian tribes of Mississippi Territory. Choctaw Register of Col. William Ward http://www.accessgenealogy.com/native/choctaw/wardregister/ Colonel William Ward was appointed United States agent to register Choctaw Indians according to Article 14 of the Treaty of Dancing Rabbit Creek, September 1830. The treaty was ratified February 24, 1831 and the six month time limit for those wishing to remain ended August 24, 1831. The registration procedure resulted in numerous "contingent claims" by members of the Choctaw Nation. Ward was not the best record keeper and in many instances even refused to register those wishing to register. History of Washington, Idaho and Montana http://www.accessgenealogy.com/history_washington_idaho_montana.htm Complete Bancroft Book of the three states. The book provides much insite into many of the Indian Tribes of the west. Historic and Quaint Forts of North America http://www.accessgenealogy.com/forts/historicforts/ An account of the most famous fortifications of North America is, in realty, a cross section of the military history of the continent; and whatever ingenuity there may be in this method of presenting the conspicuous deeds of valor of the American people will. Frontier and Colonial Forts of the United States http://www.accessgenealogy.com/forts/ List of colonial forts, frontier forts, trading posts, named camps, redoubts, reservations, general hospitals, national cemeteries, etc., established or erected in the United States from its earliest settlement to 1902. Old Marblehead Sea Captains and the Ships in Which they Sailed http://www.accessgenealogy.com/massachusetts/marblehead/index.htm This volume is intended to be a fairly accurate list of the Old Sea Captains of Marblehead, and the vessels in which they sailed, going to and from foreign ports. The list of the names of the men is very nearly complete, but the list of the vessels is not as satisfactory, it being at this late date practically impossible to obtain complete information. Many pictures are included. Handbook for War http://www.accessgenealogy.com/military/war/ Describing the Military Terms in use in the United States Service, and giving a list of the Forts and Ships belonging to the United States, together with a particular description of the more important ones. -- Native American Genealogy http://www.accessgenealogy.com/native/ AccessGenealogy http://www.accessgenealogy.com/
*Apologies for Cross/Re-Posting* Hello! Professor Wendy Roth in the Department of Sociology at the University of British Columbia is doing a research study on the social impacts of DNA ancestry testing -- especially whether it has any effect on identities and attitudes. This may have already been posted to this list, as some members of this group have graciously assisted with this study. We are still looking for participants, especially people with any Native American, Black, Hispanic, or Asian roots. We're looking to talk with people with a wide range of experiences to DNA ancestry testing, so we'd be very interested in learning about your experiences regardless of whether the test results had much influence on you or not. If you have taken a DNA ancestry test and would be willing to help with this project, would you fill out a quick online survey at: http://faculty.arts.ubc.ca/wroth/SurveyIntro.html It should only take you about 10-15 minutes. It focuses on why you chose to take the test, your background, your experience with genetic genealogy testing, and how the results may have affected you. You can fill out the survey anonymously, or if you are interested in talking more about these the social impacts of DNA ancestry testing, you can choose to be contacted for a follow-up interview as well. These interviews are done over the phone and are confidential. If you would like to be contacted for a follow-up interview, you can enter your contact information at the end of the survey. But regardless of whether you are interested in the follow-up interview, I hope you will complete the quick online survey. Thank you very much for considering this. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Prof. Wendy Roth at wroth@interchange.ubc.ca or at (604) 822-4845. You can also contact Natasia Wright, Research Assistant on this project, at natasia.social.impacts@gmail.com.
Sande, I'm not Lynda Giles, but do you happen to know the name of your GGgrandfather? I have a bunch of Chickasaw records and would be glad to see if I can find anything on her. But think it might be easier to go backwards rather than starting with anything in 1834. The Chickasaws are more than willing to help you in your search, and their address is(e-mail)genealogy@chickasaw.net. The snail mail address is: Tribal Library 1002 Chamber Loop Ada OK 74820. Phone 580-310-6488. They also have a Genealogy Archive Center 402 West 8th Street Tishomingo, OK 73460 Phone 580 371-0150. I have never used the one in Tishomingo, but have used the Ada people many times and they have been most helpful. I will check my records and see if I can find anything on Smallwood. You must keep in mind the mood of the individuals during the time-frame you are looking. After the Civil War, the mindset of the government was "save the man, kill the Indian." In other words, they wanted to break up the "tribal mindset" and assimilate them into the white society. This was one of the reasons given for creating the "Dawes Commission." But because of the mistrust of the government and what they said, many of the Indian population refused to participate and it now creates a brick wall for those individuals who are today attempting to "prove" there is Indian blood in their family tree. I personally have always known I was a Chickasaw and have been on the rolls. I also am employed by the Chickasaw Nation. I get telephone calls at my office with questions about how to prove their family heritage. And I refer them to our genealogy department, who does indeed have many records that are not available to the public on the internet or on a government website. So I would advise those individuals who are attempting to prove their Indian heritage to send a letter to the tribal genealogy department with what information you have and ask for their assistance. I know we welcome bringing our families back into the fold. Gene, My PIPKIN came out of Arkansas, this would be my ex-husbands family and his father was Wayne. My mother was a WARD and on her Paternal side is Willow Ward then on the maternal side is James Ward no relation. LaDonna
Who are you Pipkins. My grandmother's sister Dorothy Sharp married Robert Pipkin. They lived in Sterling. I've lost track of their kids. Most of them were as old as my mother, but they had a son, Stephen about 14 years after the next older one was born. He's younger then me. Listers, Today I was browsing ebay and noticed a original chickasaw - choctaw land patent deed for 80 acres made out to Edwin Bradley would be nice addition to your surname genealogy, I noticed it because the date was MAY 19 (my B-day) 1903. I am looking for info on Willow D. WARD and James WARD.
An 1896 Dawes Application includes the following information from the deposition of William Simpson, a citizen of the Chickasaw Nation (Indian Territory) about a woman named Margaret or Peggy Richardson. It indicates a Colbert family connection. Even though it is a Chickasaw application, the Colbert name gives it broader application, so I thought I would send this post and see if any Colberts recognize the family mentioned: -Begin abstract- Citizenship of J.W. Blasingame 9 May 1889 Muscogee, I.T. Union Agency William Simpson, citizen of the chickasaw Nation, at Goodland, P.O. Born 16 Dec 1822, on the Tennessee River near Colbert's Ferry, Alabama; raised partly in Chickasaw Co., MS. Knew Indian girl named "Peggy" in Mississipppi at Olamumbees old Council House and, later, when she lived up on Bear Creek near the Alabama line. Peggy had brother named Nock-la-la or Noch-ta-la and a younger brother named Chambers. Nock-la-la died in that county before the Chickasaws emigrated. Mrs. Elizabeth Perry told Simpson Peggy married a white man (thought to be J.W. Blasingame). Peggy's house name was In-ko-or-sha and she belonged to that clan. They were related to Tom Colbert, who is dead. -End Abstract- Other information: Peggy's maiden name was thought, by the family, to be Richardson, Richens, Richards....but, most often, Richardson. Her father's name was given as Bill Richardson, from McNairy Co., TN. Peggy was born about 1798 (1850 Census of Searcy Co., AR) in Tennessee and died or left the marriage about 1854 (probably died); as J.W. "Wade" Blassingame married Phoebe Campbell in 1854 in Independence Co., AR. Does anyone have family names that match this information? The Colbert family is large, so I will be posting this query in several places. I hope to hear from anyone with related information or thoughts on how to prove the data. Thanks, Kathie

Remember, there's almost always at least two ways to do anything on a computer. Printing this might be a good way to start. Let me know if links don't work or you cannot understand the instructions. > > Using the Dawes Commission Records Online > > 1. Find your names in the search engine at http://www.accessgenealogy.com/native/finalroll.php - this means that, after you have found your name in the search engine, you must click on the Card # to find the individual with family and the Category (BB=By Blood, M=Minor, NB=New Born), plus, the tribe.
