I've "rescued" three old photographs belonging to the TURBYFILL and AKIN Families. The first is one of Emma TURBYFILL AKIN and her son which was taken at the Streetor Studio in Shawnee, OK. This photograph appears to have been taken in the early 1900's with Emma in her 20's and the boy about 5 years old at the time. The second photograph is one of David TURBYFILL which was taken at the Swearingen Studio in Guthrie, Oklahoma Territory in the 1890's or early 1900's. David appears to be in his 30's or 40's at the time. The third photograph is one of Lander TURBYFILL and his wife which was taken at the A. Kaufmann Studio in Miami, FL, most likely in the early 1900's with both appearing to be in their 30's or 40's. Based on limited research I was able to locate the following information regarding this family: Emma Eliza Ruth TURBYFILL was b. 19 May 1887 in Texas to parents Marcus Tilden TURBYFILL (1840-1898) and Mary Emma HOOVER (1846-1930). Emma married Oliver Hillory AKIN (1887-1929) in Norman, OK on 6 Nov 1905 and together they had 2 children, Ralph H. (1906-1982) and Verba "Vera" AKIN (b. 1909). Emma died in Drumright, OK in Feb 1975. David W. F. TURBYFILL was b. Mar 1867 in Union Co., NC to parents Sgt. Marcus TURBYFILL and Julia SEAGLE. David married Martha WINBRAY (1873 or 1874-1966) and together they had a son, Mark Angelo TURBYFILL (1896-1990). David died in Cook Co. IL on 29 Aug 1953. Lander "Landy" Smith TURBYFILL was b. 29 Mar 1869 to parents Marcus Tilden TURBYFILL (b. 27 Apr 1840-d. 1898) and Julia Ann SEAGLE (1837-1870). Lander was one of 2 children born to this couple including, David W. F. (1867-1953); Lander Smith (1869-1940). After Landers Mother died in 1870 his father remarried Mary Emma or Emmaline "Emmer" HOOVER (b. 15 Oct 1846 in Lincoln Co., NC-d. 22 Apr 1930 in Ardmore, OK dau of David S. HOOVER and Cynthia ROBINSON) and they had at least 7 additional children including, Ida TURBYFILL POTTS BUTLER (b. 1873); Albert Sharp (1875-1845); Marcus Marvin Tilden or Tildon (1876-1961); Aldine Kiefer (1878-1956); Mary Belle or Bell TURBYFILL HARPER (1881-1960); Marcus Lee or Lee M. TURBYFILL (1884-1923); and Emma Eliza Ruth TURBYFILL AKIN (1887-1975) all born in North Carolina or Texas. Lander married two times, once to Alice V. OSTEEN (1867-1908) and the second time to Ollie M. TURBYFILL (1878-1957). With his first wife Alice, Lander had at least 5 children including, Gertrude (b. 1890); Blanche R. TURBYFILL CHESSER (b. 18 Jan 1894-1969); Virtus Europa (1900-1973); Phalta (1896 or 1897-1970); and Lander Seagle TURBYFILL (1903-1963). Lander and his wife Ollie had one child together. Lander died in Ft. Pierce, FL on 1 Apr 1940 and is buried in the Evergreen Cemetery in Okeechobee, FL. I have Janet Chesser b.1777 London, d.1859 London, m.29.3.1806 to Alexander Hill, baker , London. There is a query about her name. She may have been formerly Baraby or somehow connected to Baraby. Very few records on either name and I have no other Chesser info. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Rhonda Bell" <rhondabell@gmail.com> To: <chesser@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, June 23, 2008 3:28 PM Subject: Re: [CHESSER] George Thomas CHESSER = Agnes STARLING >I do not descend from this line, but I was doing some checking of records >at > Ancestry.com and FamilySearch.org, and may have some hints for you. > > I found George and Agnes on the 1900 census, in Dunnellon, Marion Co., > Florida. I do not descend from this line, but I was doing some checking of records at Ancestry.com and FamilySearch.org, and may have some hints for you. I found George and Agnes on the 1900 census, in Dunnellon, Marion Co., Florida. (ED 91 page 137A.) It states: Chesser, George, head, b. April 1878, age 29, b. FL/ father b. GA/ mother b. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/gYI.2ACEB/262 Message Board Post: I have found the parents of his 2nd child, James P. Chesser b. 1800 VA. They are John Chesher b. abt. 1769 and Sarah Hawkins b. about 1782, the daughter of William Hawkins and Elizabeth --?--. John Chesher married Sarah "Sally" Hawkins in Fauquier Co. VA in 1795. They moved to Monongalia Co. VA and possibly lived in Harrison Co. VA before that. John Chesher died in abt. 1804. Sally Hawkins Chesher then married Abraham Hill in March 1805 in Monongalia Co. She brought her oldest Chesher son, William b. 1798, James b. 1800, and her newborn daughter (?) b. abt. 1804 to the marriage. She then had three sons by Abraham Hill. This family of Chessers (the spelling was never "Chesher" again after crossing into Ohio) and Hills moved to Salem/Harlan Twp. Warren Co. Ohio around 1813. By the early 1830s, the Chessers, Hills, and other allied families such as the Hawkins, Spurlings, Eberharts, and Lees had migrated from Ohio to Shelby Co. Indiana where many remain today and in nea! rby counties and states.
