    1. Re: [CHS] Pounsworth?? Cheshire
    2. From: "Eric Millward" <bruckshaw1@tiscali.co.uk> > In the 1851 census I have Jane LEIGH, unmarried, aged 20 in Heaton > Mersey Stockport. Her birth place is given clearly as Pounsworth, > Cheshire but that is a new placename for me as a lifelong Cheshire > resident. > > The 1841 census does not help in this and by 1861 she is not with her > parents. > > Any ideas please? Mobberley area perhaps?> I wonder if "Pownsworth" (which is how I read it on the 1851 image) could be a local dialect name, or possibly the enumerator's abbreviation, for Poynton-with-Worth? I think I found her in 1841 at the following reference: HO107 piece 111 folio 1/6 page 7. You will tell me, I am sure, that in 1851 her parents were James and Mary and in 1841 they were James and Hannah. But compare the names and ages of the four children Jane, James, John and Robert in both censuses and you will see that they appear to match! They were at Heald Green, Stockport Etchells. You should consider the possibility that Hannah died and James remarried to a Mary. Indeed, you will find with FreeBMD deaths for half a dozen Hannah Leighs at Stockport RD between 1841 and 1851, and potential marriages (5) for James Leigh to a Mary, also at Stockport, in the same period, -- Roy Stockdill Genealogical researcher, writer & lecturer Famous family trees blog: http://blog.findmypast.co.uk/tag/roy-stockdill/ "There is only one thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about." 3. Hello again Roy, I have settled for Poundswick which fits perfectly with all my other information. I can now investigate later material with some confidence. Thanks again, Eric Millward
