Hi All, In 1881 Anne GOODWIN nee HUDSON was living in North Rode. With her are a son John HUDSON and a grandson John William GOODWIN. I cannot find the connection between him and his grandmother. Ancestry indexes John as John William's father but I think it has made a false assumption. Anne HUDSON was bap 23 Apr 1809 in Gawsworth, daughter of James and Sarah. She had a son John Lawton HUDSON in 1832, born at North RODE and bap at Gawsworth. She married Samuel GOODWIN 25 Jun 1838 in Prestbury. On that date Samuel was a servant living in Macclesfield. In 1851 Anne is a widow and a charwoman in Macclesfield Union Workhouse (birth shown as 1811). I cannot find her in 1841 nor a death for Samuel. In 1861 she is living with her mother and son John in North Rode (birth year given as 1816). In 1871 she is living with son John and her name is entered as HUDSON. Also there is a nephew, Richard HUDSON, 7, b Macclesfield. If his name is, in fact, HUDSON rather than GOODWIN then he is no direct link to John William GOODWIN. The 1881 census is given above. I cannot find Anne in 1891 nor a death or marriage for her. I tried and failed to find a link to John William GOODWIN, 1872 so I ordered a birth cert. for him. I could only find one birth and the cert. says he was born 4 Apr 1872, in Mill Lane Sutton, the son of Samuel GOODWIN and Elizabeth nee SMITH. The father is a clerk in a silk mill. There is a matching marriage in Macclesfield in Apr-Jun 1860. Unfortunately I cannot find that marriage cert. on FMP. In 1881, however, there are 2 possible census entries for him. One is with "grandmother" Anne as above, the other is in Macclesfield Union Workhouse. All details are the same except for the address. So has he been entered twice or are there 2 of them and if so have I got the certificate of the one I wanted? I would have thought Macclesfield would have queried which one I wanted if there were two but I can't be sure. There are other John births and a John William in Congleton but only one John William in Macclesfield. The 1881 entry for him in the workhouse has potential siblings Edwin 10, Bertha 9 and Robert 12. Looking at potential children for Samuel and Anne (the grandparents) there are some in Tamworth but those I have found I have been able to eliminate. The most promising is George bap 2 Dec (or 30 Nov) 1838 in North Rode. There is a George b 1836, Astbury living in Odd Rode in 1851 but this is the nearest I can find. And really I want a Samuel but can't find one. Looking at Samuel and Elizabeth pairs in 1861 and 1871 gets me no further on. I cannot find a possible match. So can anyone establish the missing link? Any help or suggestions greatly appreciated. Christine
