Hello I am trying to obtain details of the uncle’s time in the army during WW2. I believe he was in the Grenadier Guards, but have no further information about him. I do not have his service number. He lived in Manchester and I have his birth certificate and death certificate. I wrote to the army records office in Glasgow. His date of birth was sufficient for them to search but I was informed that he was not in their records and my £30 cheque was returned. They said that records for the Guards regiments are stored in Wellington Barracks in London and that I should try there. Wellington Barracks told me that they cannot find a soldiers records without the service number and were not able suggest where I could find this. Has anyone had the same problem? If so was the problem solved? Regards Michael
If he was a PoW, as my own uncle was, the British WW2 PoW records are on Ancestry. It gives his service number, rank, regiment and PoW camp. That's the only ready source of service numbers - obviously limited - that I'm aware of. Ian Thank you you for your helpful email. George was not a POW, but I had not thought of looking in Ancestry. I will try that and see if I can find anything. I was assuming in my ignorance that the Regimental Barracks would hold all the details that I needed to know. Regards Michael
