    3. Yes, I had one today too and let the young woman ramble on before I had great joy in telling her I didn't have a Windows computer so how could I be "registered" with them. She couldn't answer that probably cos it wasn't on the script. 3. The other way is to say that you have several computer so which one do they mean. A friend did this and switched on an ancient very slow laptop that was not connected to the Internet because he was interested to see how they work the scam. They told him to bring up the CMD prompt then type in a DIR command for a particular file extension, this brought up hundreds of matches (they were some very obscure system files). They expressed concern because the computer was heavily infected and wanted him to give them remote access. I just do not pick up any International, Withheld etc calls and also any numbers that I do not recognise. I let the answer machine take the call, if it is a genuine call then they will speak but the majority either hand up or are just silent. You have to bear in mind that it is quite easy to fake the number displayed on your phone or buy blocks of numbers around the country so some scam / junk callers use a number on your local exchange to make it look genuine. When they hang up I look up the number, most times other people have been getting junk / scam calls from the same number and often someone will have identified them though often you find the same number has been used for lots of different junk or scam calls over the years. http://whocallsme.com/ I then store the number in my DECT phone's contacts and set it to be in a JUNK group which has a suitable selective ring so I know next time it is a junk caller without having to look. There are a few devices that you can get to intercept these type of calls but let friends numbers connect as normal. The best known is this one, I would buy one tomorrow if they improved it slightly in one area. http://www.truecall.co.uk/home.aspx Martin Briscoe Fort William martin@mbriscoe.me.uk -----Original Message----- From: cheshire-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:cheshire-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Jenni Sent: 16 June 2014 10:09 To: CHESHIRE-L Subject: Re: [CHS] Non-gen - Another round of scam phone calls Yes, I had one today too and let the young woman ramble on before I had great joy in telling her I didn't have a Windows computer so how could I be "registered" with them.
