I did a few searches earlier. All the Google matches are from the same source (a will?) and are associated with Robert de Bracy. I then searched on Robert de Bracy, he appears on lots of sites with genealogical information (probably all copied from each other) but nothing mentioning anything like 'black nephew' so it does seem like a mistranscription somewhere in the past. That would fit with the context better than 'black.' ' William Malbank, Baron of Nantwich, gives notice that he has received of Robert de Bracy, his beloved nephew, homage and 3 knights' fees.' Any comments on this theory? Thanks to Martin and Lyn for their help. I have referred the enquiry back to the originator, with the suggestions.
