    1. [CHS] Census records - 1821 and 1831
    2. Lilian Fowler
    3. Hello everyone, I wonder if anyone knows whether there are any 1821 and 1831 census records for the Cheadle area. My family are Thomas Higham, wife Elizabeth (Betty) and their children Henry 1818 through to Elizabeth (Betty) 1829. The address given on the baptism sheets was Edgeley. I realise that this is a very long shot, but as I have the census sheets for my Pearson family who I think would be living in Alderley as the address on their children's baptism records was Nether Alderley I thought that I would give it a try. Thomas is living with his 2nd wife at Larkhill, Cheadle Bulkley in 1841. Thank you - Lilian

    3. I think your sensible other half has come up with the answer, if the document's in English, as "black nephew" makes no sense at all! If in Latin, the word black (niger is the usual) also has a number of other meanings as well as black, which include "unlucky" ."bad" and "dark haired". And it's not the only Latin word which could be translated as "black". Somebody has made a mistake in transcription I reckon. My other half is also a non family historian, but is often good at cutting to the chase. His last offering was "you've got too many Marys"! 3. That's a good suggestion Lyn. I'll send it on. However, the original enquiry came from someone who had read it in a transcription of the "Battle Abbey Roll" so the original (if it was) Latin is somewhat remote. This is where the transcription may be found - you have to scroll down until you come to the paragraph headed Bracy, or Ctrl-F, and put Malbank in the search box: http://www.1066.co.nz/library/battle_abbey_roll1/chap01.htm I do not vouch for its accuracy, veracity or authenticity!! 3. I did a few searches earlier. All the Google matches are from the same source (a will?) and are associated with Robert de Bracy. I then searched on Robert de Bracy, he appears on lots of sites with genealogical information (probably all copied from each other) but nothing mentioning anything like 'black nephew' so it does seem like a mistranscription somewhere in the past. 3. Interesting Karl. I haven't come across that expression before, and sometimes the context suggests a meaning. In this case, it didn't, but I've put the question to another group and I'll let you know if anyone comes back with an explanation.
