    3. I should have looked closer. At this address were Elsie's parents, Herbert age 27 and Elizabeth age 25, Elizabeth was born in Rudhearth. They were living with Elizabeths parents. Elsie was listed as a grandchild and Elizabeth as a daughter. However, hate to put a damper on this. The census was 1911. I think if they had a son he would have been to young to enlist in the 1st world war. Pity your cousin cannot come up with some other names. A major clue I found for my family was a family name on a Knutsford cenotaph. It enabled me to search the British Commonwealth Forces grave site. This gave me his parents and their address.  Mike Morris Toronto, Canada   From: Gill Walsh <GILLIAN52@aol.com> To: Mike Morris <morrisind@rogers.com> Sent: Tuesday, December 30, 2014 2:54 PM   That is brilliant thank you so much Mike really appreciate it. Married Herbert Turton at St Cross Appleton Thorn in 1903. The children’s full names are fairly uncommon which I would have thought made searching easier. I’m wondering whether this is one of those Census records with spelling errors so I've tried a few variations of Turton, without success. Any ideas welcome! 2. Eric Millward via
    3. I have just returned to Stockport after a couple of days staying with family in Bristol during which we visited the M.shed museum and learned that the ex-Stockport VERNONs on my tree very likely worked at the Great Western Cotton Mill. A web search for the mill produced this item by Paul Townsend 1872 The weaving shed of the Great Western Cotton Works covered nearly an acre of ground and housed more than 800 looms. More than 500, mainly female, employees worked in the shed. Machinery in the adjacent sheds was powered by a revolving shaft, some 180ft in length, which weighed several tons. The shaft crossed the weaving shed, fixed to a solid ceiling beam by heavy iron bearings. The beam itself was supported by cast-iron columns. Shortly after two o’clock, one end of the beam broke away from its fastenings. As it swung slowly round, more bearings and columns were broken and within seconds, the shaft and beam crashed onto the looms below, completely crushing them. More than seventy girls were working directly below the beam but miraculously only ten were injured. Five were well enough to be sent home but the remaining l five were sent to the Infirmary, where Clara Robins (15) died from her injuries. An inquest on her death held by coroner Mr H.S. Wasbrough recorded a verdict of ‘accidental death'. Martha Vernon (19) escaped the first fall, but a piece of iron fell onto her head as she was trying to pull a little girl out of the debris. Martha later died from a fractured skull. I can't believe it .....poor young Martha is one of mine born in Stockport in 1853! Eric Millward ----- No virus found in this message. 3. I have received this from another list. ""NEW.FAMILYSEARCH.ORG WILL BE TURNED OFF ON FEBRUARY 1, 2015 The next step to fully implement FamilySearch Family Tree on FamilySearch.org is to disable the ability for users to login to and access new.FamilySearch.org. This milestone is planned to occur on February 1, 2015. On February 1, all public APIs (application programming interfaces) will be turned off, as will be the ability to access the program. This step is necessary as we enter the final phase, which is to transfer and synchronize all of the remaining data from new.FamilySearch.org to FamilySearch Family Tree. It is anticipated that this final phase of data testing, transfer, and retesting will require a year to complete. Once this phase is completed in early 2016, new.FamilySearch.org will be completely shut down. It is important to note that many highly desired features of FamilySearch Family Tree cannot begin to be developed until new.FamilySearch.org has reached the final milestone and is completely shut-off. Once that has happened, work can begin on features such as: Merging of gateway ancestors and other people with large records. Highlighting and fixing other data eccentricities, such as when a person appears to have been married before birth, a child older than a parent, a child who is the spouse of parent or grandparent, and so on. The ability for users to change the gender of an ancestor. The ability to see a spouse's ancestral line by default. The patron submissions as well as the extracted data have always been and continue to be included and accessible, but one has to know where to find them. They can be accessed at the following URL: https://familysearch.org/search/collection/igi You will see two categories to be searched, (1) Community Contributed IGI (Personal family information submitted to the LDS Church) (these are the patron submissions), and (2) Community Indexed IGI (Vital and church records from the early 1500s to 1885), the indexed (extracted) records, nearly all of which are baptisms (christenings) and marriages. So the marriages that were extracted data and found in the IGI are still found there, as well as the baptisms. One can search by name, date, place, and/or batch numbers using the IGI, and you can search either patron submitted or extracted data, or both. The IGI is not being updated (and has not been added to for some time), but Family Search has expressed a commitment to keep all the information in the IGI on the Family Search website and to keep it available and searchable. All new data is going directly into Family Search Family Tree, with older data migrated to Family Tree. 1. [CHS] Ware strangers!
    2. Liz Owen via
    3. Hello Recently I have done research on a couple of members of a French family from the Isère. One of them, Joseph Gaspard, came to England in the early 1900s to work as a guide (and general dogsbody I think) at the Wasdale/ Wastwater Hotel in Cumbria. He’s on the 1911 census for that place, and he’s also on the Roll of Honour in the church at Nether Wasdale; he was killed on the Somme in 1916. Also on the census for that year is Alexandre Gaspard; his father was Joseph’s grandfather, though the two were much of an age. Alexandre is boarding with Mary Jane Hewitt at 58 Byram Street, Altrincham; he’s a rock climber, working on his own account (rg_20528_0121_03) The two Gaspards must have met up at the end of the previous year because Alexandre was busy on 30th Dec 2010 opening new routes on Great Gable with two English climbers. What I would like to find out, if there’s any way of doing that, is why a rock climber would be living in Altrincham. I know there are places close by which would test some of today’s “crag rats”, but the early part of the 20th century? And if Byram Street still exists, is there anyone who could take a photo of no 58. I’m trying to provide as much info as I can about these two for the Musée d’Alpinisme in in St Christophe en Oisans Liz Owen (on a day excursion from the Cumberland List)
