    1. [CHS] Soldiers Records
    2. Michael Jackson
    3. Hello I am trying to obtain details of the uncle’s time in the army during WW2. I believe he was in the Grenadier Guards, but have no further information about him. I do not have his service number. He lived in Manchester and I have his birth certificate and death certificate. I wrote to the army records office in Glasgow. His date of birth was sufficient for them to search but I was informed that he was not in their records and my £30 cheque was returned. They said that records for the Guards regiments are stored in Wellington Barracks in London and that I should try there. Wellington Barracks told me that they cannot find a soldiers records without the service number and were not able suggest where I could find this. Has anyone had the same problem? If so was the problem solved? Regards Michael

Ann Braddock 1829, John Braddock 1833 and James Braddock 1836 (according to the 1851 census they were living with their grandparents John and Margaret Braddock. They were also with them in the 1841 census. They were all born in Werneth, Cheshire according to census. The only records I can find for Werneth do not start until 1846. Grandparents were living in Hyde, stockport, Cheshire and are non conformists. They are not on these records either. Any help appreciated Regards Trish Essex

    3. It sounds to me as if these children were in an orphanage run by the Sisters and not a convent per se. In the US children in orphanages seem to be listed only after they reach a certain age. Perhaps these children continued to be enumerated in the same city/town. I wonder if you have looked for a marriage for any of them. Or was this an orphanage where children could be adopted? If so, they could have been living under another surname in the next census. Lots of questions with no answers, I think. Jan > > 1. 3. Elaine, Mike and Martin Thank you very much for this it is appreciated. I am surprised that I missed this entry though but perhaps I had limited my recent searches to Cheshire. I see that there are actually two records - one under FONTER and the other under FOSTER. Martin has sent me a copy of the marriage which is under the name of FOSTER so I am presuming that the other record relates to a marriage license as it only gives the place name and not the church. Thank you Elaine for the information regarding John KAY's first wife. I wonder if it was a marriage of necessity given the age difference and the fact that I can't find any further children especially as there is only 4 months or so between the marriage and the birth of the daughter. John KAY was born in KNUTSFORD and the most likely contender at this stage for his parents are James KAY and Sarah FOXLEY who were married in 1785 at KNUTSFORD. The Liverpool connection must however be correct as it is recorded quite clearly in two separate records. I don't really know where to start with this one but perhaps I will leave this for later. Regards, Christine -----Original Message----- From: Elaine Hanson [mailto:odessa@dsl.pipex.com] Sent: Wednesday, 5 March 2014 12:18 a.m. To: Christine Tregonning; 'Cheshire' Subject: Re: [CHS] Auxiliary Registers - Witton Christine, No - it isn't how the register has been filmed, only how FMP have chosen to display it. The full entry Ellen KEY is dtr of John Key of Winsham(Wincham), Rockgetter (of James & Sarah Key) of Liverpool) and Mary (of Will'm & Mary Sothurn of Winsham) born 19 MAR 1808 bap 3 APR 1808. [transcribed from the microfilm of the parish registers] Familysearch has indexed a marriage of John Key to a Mary Southern 20 DEC 1807 at St Mary & All Saints, Great Budworth - if you have some credits left it might be useful to check the entry. Now, there's a marriage indexed on Familysearch at Manchester 16 FEB 1824 of a John Kay to an Ann FONTER, I think that there's a good possibility FONTER could be a mis-transcription of FOSTER (think of the old fashioned lower case "s" and "n"). It may be worth you looking at Lancashire, many Cheshire couples married at either Liverpool or Manchester in the big churches/cathedrals. I believe you would probably need to get access to Ancestry to try and get the details of this marriage, if you are U.K. based, then a Library would be the place to enquire. Ann Kay of Wincham indexed on Familysearch as buried Gt Budworth 9 MAR 1844 a51y regards, Elaine.

In the 1851 census they are living at Hartford Road in Castle Northwich but in the 1871 census George is married to a lady by the name of Elizabeth who is about 20 years his senior. Living with the couple are two of George's children from his marriage to Ellen, Mary aged 14 and Eliza 7. The register at Great Budworth records the burial of Ellen WILLIAMS who died at the House of Correction at Knutsford in 1858 aged 46 years. Is there any way that I can confirm whether this is the same Ellen WILLIAMS and if it is, how can I find out what she did presuming she was an inmate and not a worker there. Regards, Christine

    1. [CHS] Auxiliary Registers - Witton
    2. Christine Tregonning
    3. Hello, A while ago there was a discussion about auxiliary registers and I learnt that these were available for Witton. This has sparked my recent interest in my research into my forebears from Cheshire and in particular in the area around Northwich and although I don't have a lot of money at present I have subscribed for a brief period to Find my Past so I am trying to make the most of it while I can. I have identified that Ann wife of John KAY from WINCHAM (my forebears) is most likely to be Ann FORSTER daughter of William FORSTER and Hannah FARRINGTON who were married at GREAT BUDWORTH in 1792. This ties in with a baptism of an Ann FORSTER in 1793 with parents William and Ann. I have still not been able to find a marriage for Ann FORSTER and John KAY which I had presumed took place sometime before the birth of their first identified child in 1825. It was pointed out to me that this was a bit late for a first marriage for both parties. I have since found a baptism at WITTON for an Ellen KEY who was born in 1808. Ellen's parent's were John KEY and Mary. Now there is no doubt that this John KEY and my John KAY are the same person and although I cannot find a record of any other children to this marriage a Mary KAY aged 50 from WINCHAM is recorded as being buried in 1822. Now my problem is that the copy of the register on Find My Past that gives the mother's parent's names has been cut off so that only the mother's Christian name is left. Will this be how the page was filmed or just how it has been linked on Find my Past and is there any way that I can find the full entry. Regards, Christine

    3. Hi I wonder if anyone is researching the Duckworth family who lived at Curzon House, Curzon Park, Chester early 1900s? I have just discovered that one of my relatives - Kathleen Nancy Jones from Wrexham - appears to have married the eldest son, William Innes Duckworth, 1938. The father, Walter Battersby Duckworth was a cotton merchant of English parentage but born in Savannah, Georgia, USA c. 1879. He was in partnership at Chester with Joseph Battersby Duckworth & Hubert Battersby Duckworth - probably three brothers. Walter was also at Liverpool. Just checked on a web page and seems Joseph was the father and Walter & Hubert sons. Anyone connected out there? Cheers Graham Melbourne Oz

    1. [CHS] John William GOODWIN, 1872 - can anyone connect him to grandmother Anne?
    2. Christine Benson
    3. Hi All, In 1881 Anne GOODWIN nee HUDSON was living in North Rode. With her are a son John HUDSON and a grandson John William GOODWIN. I cannot find the connection between him and his grandmother. Ancestry indexes John as John William's father but I think it has made a false assumption. Anne HUDSON was bap 23 Apr 1809 in Gawsworth, daughter of James and Sarah. She had a son John Lawton HUDSON in 1832, born at North RODE and bap at Gawsworth. She married Samuel GOODWIN 25 Jun 1838 in Prestbury. On that date Samuel was a servant living in Macclesfield. In 1851 Anne is a widow and a charwoman in Macclesfield Union Workhouse (birth shown as 1811). I cannot find her in 1841 nor a death for Samuel. In 1861 she is living with her mother and son John in North Rode (birth year given as 1816). In 1871 she is living with son John and her name is entered as HUDSON. Also there is a nephew, Richard HUDSON, 7, b Macclesfield. If his name is, in fact, HUDSON rather than GOODWIN then he is no direct link to John William GOODWIN. The 1881 census is given above. I cannot find Anne in 1891 nor a death or marriage for her. I tried and failed to find a link to John William GOODWIN, 1872 so I ordered a birth cert. for him. I could only find one birth and the cert. says he was born 4 Apr 1872, in Mill Lane Sutton, the son of Samuel GOODWIN and Elizabeth nee SMITH. The father is a clerk in a silk mill. There is a matching marriage in Macclesfield in Apr-Jun 1860. Unfortunately I cannot find that marriage cert. on FMP. In 1881, however, there are 2 possible census entries for him. One is with "grandmother" Anne as above, the other is in Macclesfield Union Workhouse. All details are the same except for the address. So has he been entered twice or are there 2 of them and if so have I got the certificate of the one I wanted? I would have thought Macclesfield would have queried which one I wanted if there were two but I can't be sure. There are other John births and a John William in Congleton but only one John William in Macclesfield. The 1881 entry for him in the workhouse has potential siblings Edwin 10, Bertha 9 and Robert 12. Looking at potential children for Samuel and Anne (the grandparents) there are some in Tamworth but those I have found I have been able to eliminate. The most promising is George bap 2 Dec (or 30 Nov) 1838 in North Rode. There is a George b 1836, Astbury living in Odd Rode in 1851 but this is the nearest I can find. And really I want a Samuel but can't find one. Looking at Samuel and Elizabeth pairs in 1861 and 1871 gets me no further on. I cannot find a possible match. So can anyone establish the missing link? Any help or suggestions greatly appreciated. Christine

    1. [CHS] FW: Harlington - location and BROOM family (also STUBBS WARBURTON NIELD )
    2. Christine Tregonning
    3. Hello, Further to my previous query which was somewhat hijacked by a discussion about Lordships I have done some further digging and I think I have come up with the answer that I was looking for although I am missing some vital information that would provide definite proof. It was pointed out to me what I thought looked like HARLINGTON was in fact HASLINGTON but I couldn't find a Mary BROOM that would fit. There was a Mary BROOM born at Church Lawton about the right time to a Hugh but the record that I was looking at was for a burial. What I did find was a Baptism of a Mary JONES who was the daughter of Hugh BROOM and Martha JONES at HASLINGTON. Further to this there is a marriage of a Mary JONES to a John WARBURTON in WITTON in 1759. Mary resided in the neighbouring parish of DAVENHAM while John was a yeoman from WITTON. What I can't find is the death or burial of John WARBURTON or any children born to John WARBURTON and Mary JONES. If I have the right marriage John WARBURTON died on or before 26 April 1764 when his widow Mary WARBURTON married Matthew STUBBS. I can find a record of five children of this marriage Sarah (no record of baptism but born about 1765), Mary (1768), Martha (1770), John (1772) and Richard (1774). Matthew STUBBS died in 1775 and Mary STUBBS married Richard NIELD in 1777. Mary STUBBS and Richard NIELD had the following children Betty (1777), Nancy (1779) and Mary (1782). Richard NIELD died in 1828 and administration of his estate was granted to his daughter Betty GANDEY. The other two people mentioned were John STUBBS of LOSTOCK GRALAM and Richard STUBBS of ALLOSTOCK. This adds weight to the theory that the widow of Matthew STUBBS married Richard NIELD. Now my question is whether this should be enough for me to conclude that the Mary WARBURTON that married my ancestor was Mary JONES the illegitimate daughter of Martha Jones and Hugh BROOM and I was wondering whether anyone else was researching WARBURTON from WITTON or thereabouts. Regards, Christine -----Original Message----- From: Christine Tregonning [mailto:CJTregonning@xtra.co.nz] Sent: Tuesday, 25 February 2014 8:03 p.m. To: 'cheshire@rootsweb.com' Subject: Harlington - location and BROOM family (also STUBBS WARBURTON NIELD ) Hello, I am wondering if anyone can help me or tell me whether I am on the right track. I am researching my STUBBS family and I have a Matthew STUBBS who marries a widow by the name of Mary WARBURTON in 1764 at Witton. Matthew STUBBS dies in 1775. In 1777 a Mary STUBBS marries a Richard NIELD. It is easy to assume that this Mary is the widow of Matthew especially as both Matthew and Richard lived at a place called Lordship. I am keen to confirm this as well as the maiden name of Mary who married Matthew STUBBS. Mary who married Richard NIELD appears to be the daughter of Hugh and Martha BROOM who resided at a place called Harlington which I have been unable to locate. So I am looking for a marriage of a Mary BROOM to a WARBURTON. I can't find one and don't know where to look. I did find a Mary BROWN who I thought looked promising and I found a Thomas WARBURTON who died in 1764 but this Thomas appears to have died before Mary WARBURTON married Matthew. Any ideas or assistance would be appreciated. Regards, Christine
