BIG HUGE roadblock, Susan I have a great grandmother named Lillie Love Woods m John H. Shelton, 1896. She is earliest found on the 1880 Charleston, Swain Co., NC Census. Lillie is 4. Her mother is Hazletine Woods who is listed as 'wife' to 'M. Woods'. Not sure that 'wife' part is correct. Mother in law is Sarah Woods age 54, widowed. The only possible census listing prior to that is William G and Sarah Woods in Polk , TN and not sure if I should even be talking about them....it's that wide open. Others in the household in 1880 are Marion, John, David, Martha. We know little to nothing more. Except to say that 'grandma said her grandma was Indian.........................' Don't laugh.
