Osiyo Karen, Does your family still have a clan? If not, what was the last one? A clan could not marry within itself and it always passed down through the matrileaneal lines, never the males. Therefore, uncles traditionally taught the way of the Cherokee to their nephews. A nice segue on your site might be through clan affiliations. Be careful of the FTM, some genealogies are somewhat flawed, due to the fact some people take the lazy way of solving their genealogy, instead of looking for the correlating details such as bonifide records. Another shortcut is to use a well-researched genealogist's book about your line, with footnotes you can research yourself. Digging in public records is part of the joy of putting the puzzle pieces together. When you really get into the records, you will laugh at how vague some of the FTM's really are, and how common mispellings, differences in DOB's and even, race, occur. I recommend Barbara Benge, who has done much research on the Benge line. Also Jeanne Sharp for the Georgia Mulkeys and Philip Hunt for the 'Mulkeys in America' and Tyner's 'Our People'. Starr is another great for your collection, but David Keith Hampton's recent revision is very good too. After you verify your resources, photo's are always a treasured addition, since often photographs are harder to trace than records. Genealogy resources are easy to find since the advent of the internet, but depending on how serious a researcher you are, the internet is never the end all when it comes to substantiating your findings. That's one of the reasons the Cherokee Nation is swamped and over a year behind when it comes to processing applications, which used to take less than a month up until just a few years ago. Unfortunately, I know very little about computer wizardry, but there are many fine beginner's guides and classes out there (try your local community college) to help you expand your site by teaching you the tools to use. If you ever do post your genealogy online, remember to never post anyone living, or the recently deceased within the last generation or two, since unfortuanately, we live in an age of identity theft and putting your family's mother's maiden name out there isn't a good idea since too many companies still use this antiquated question as supposed security. We have been the victims of ID theft some years ago (not from genealogy) and I assure you, it is a major hassle! Good luck and keep up the good work! :) Karen Prater <texas_celtic@hotmail.com> wrote: Dear Jay I am working on putting up my family tree, (havent figured out how yet) to go with my beaded crafts. I have several record books that are of help when sorting my tree I have "the History of the Cherokee Nation" by Emmett Starr and I have the "Cherokee Emigration Rolls 1817-1835 and a lady was so very sweet to send me a copy of "Spring Place" I also have several city and cemetery books from Oklahoma and a few Chronicles of Oklahoma not to mention Dora Wards sort of story of her life records are also good like census altho they can be very wrong also. Some people prefer to make them up, I feel sorry for them if you make up ansesters then you are a lie and nothing about you can be true. very sad. Some of my information my not be right but its not on purpose, that is for sure. Errors and typos and such will happen, omisions sometimes on purpose but I am trying to do the best I can. have a couple of family memebers living that want more online than I will alow but it comes do to its my site, I think?
