Susan, I assume you have looked on the 1920 census without finding them ? Could they have used nicknames? There are a few other records you might try to find. Draft records, tax records, voting records, ect. Have you tried to find county records where they lived (some are online?). I always like to start with rootsweb.com and go to the county lists & boards. Join the county list and post your surnames and ask if anyone has access to records that might help. While you wait go to the boards and search within the records there. Use google.com to search as well. That is just a basic idea that might help you. Perhaps you've already done all this. IF so, let us know and we can try some other ideas. One more thought. Did you look at the census yourself or online records that was transcriped? If they are not original there could be an err in your names. For example my family was written as H. ADKINS on the index and I was seeking Hezekiah ADKISSON. I pulled up that page (just in case) and low and behold it was ADKISSON on the record, sort of scratched on, and the person transcribing misread it. When you are dealing with transcription anything can happen. Also, if you are using the soundex, be sure the name can't be soundexed two ways. Example: MYER and MYERS completely different soundexes. THOMPSON and THOMSON different. I have many like this and I must look in both soundexes. good luck, Debbie ----- Original Message ----- From: "susan smathers" <susan56@tampabay.rr.com> To: <CherokeeGene-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, May 07, 2006 4:35 AM Subject: [CherokeeGeneCommunity] lost ancestors >I can not find my grandfather or my great-grandmother on the federal >census. Perhaps your James Ervin was married before. That may be why you couldn't find him. Or he may be living with someone else, not Catherine. You didn't say when they married. In the 1930 U.S. Federal Census, "James E. Hill", age 29 (born about 1901) is living in Barnwell Twp., Barnwell County, South Carolina; recorded on page 16 B. Enumerated on 22 April 1930. James and his wife, Erline S. are living with her parents, Judson L. Gill, or Sill, or Dill. (Hard to read). The entire family is listed as white. There are some other people named James Hill in the 1930 census, born circa 1901 or 1911; living in SC; they are listed as Negro. You didn't say what would be the most likely racial designation.
