Hmmmm I'm not sure but I do know that my father's grandfather was 1/2 african american and was considered mulatto in all census records. My father was also considered mulatto until he moved to another area where he could claim white and no one knew the difference. Curious..I think it was left up to the discretion of the census taker... Tootles Sharon
