I never heard this name until recently. My father had an Uncle Elzy who had died at age 21. We realized where he got his name when we found out Elzy's grandmother was a Choctaw/Chickasaw/ with a sister and several female ancestors named Alsey/Alcey. Someone said it was short for Alice.
