Hi, I'm working on my son-in-law's KELLUM ancestry and tracking down the CARTER family and their Tsalagi connection. Hoping to find information on Julia Carter Strickland and her ancestry, especially any Cherokee tribe links. I have a picture of her daughter Wincie Mentora nee' Strickland Jones standing with her husband John Henry JONES in which she has a feather in her hair in the Cherokee style. Also finding it curious that female descendants have continued using the names Wincie and Mentora ... any ideas? Julia b. 1835 d/o George and Mehany Wincie (nee' Waller) CARTER in GA 1850 lived with parents in Monroe Co., GA 1851 m. Solomon STRICKLAND Butts Co., GA 1860 - 1870 lived in Tallapoosa Co., AL I've found quite a few Carters listed on the rolls, but having a hard time tracking down family members to see if any are related.
